I believe this song is about being a young girl (person) who is stepping out and discovering life and love and everything for themselves. Mother is a controlling person who has sheltered and does not approve of their child's new life style. It's about speaking up for yourself, CHOOSING things for yourself..its a huge step and its hard to do if you have an overbearing mother..trust me. I relate so much to this song. To me, 23 represents a pivotal time age wise, maturity wise, its like a break into a more sophistocated adulthood. Turning 23 is special, in the way all of us go though stages...The beginning of adulthood (early 20's) is a little scary, you're trying to get used to being on your own, loves' come and go, friends come and go, you get more stability and choices in jobs, marriage...I mean this is a huge stepping-stone in life. and for most people it usually happens around this time..maturity, growing from the kid stuff for once. I think the song represents how this person was very much in love with a person who did not want them at all , and for several years they held onto this person..and got nothing back from them in return..so a reflection of everything else going in this person's life. they now have realized that holding onto this person is only holding them back, from new love, life..in general. The sad undertones in this song in a way make me feel like yes the person who wrote this let go of that one they loved for so long..but in many ways they will always hold onto that person for the rest of their life..and "Youll sit alone forever If you wait for the right time What are you hoping for?" ---that line pops out to me so much, it means I'm moving on, I'm growing up, and because I care about you I'm giving you an ultimatum...you either grow with me, and hopefully choose to decide to be in my life finally. or i'm leaving you behind.. Its' saying - We're getting older, we need to move, both of us...either together or apart...And hopefully its together. -hollyliz. |
