| Bon Iver – Creature Fear Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Although I agree it's incongruous with the personal feel of the album I think it's definitely a commentary on the US's foreign policy. That aside it's mixed with very bitter feelings of betrayal towards a person. So in conclusion it's personal geo-political ramble with one of the best choruses ever committed to vinyl. And the live version... If anyone can listen to this whilst driving and not punch the roof of their car like the Dude in the Big Lebowski then they have terrific self-control. |

This song means self-deprecation and regret. He tells us why but not why he didn't mean to hurt her. ??? |

| Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Is it not about the media's need for a villain; or hero? If this was on Dreamworks then ES's feelings about being commercialised were well documented and this song hones in on the way he felt molested. The references to Berkowitz just reflect the way the media has pin-ups to gain eyes, the same way the music press has - and he didn't want to be part of it. |

| Elliott Smith – Baby Britain Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Jeez. What did he mean by calling a song Baby Britain? It's nothing but an affection for a nation, note lack of capitals, that he had a fling with one of its compatriots. And he picked up on the drinking habit as well but I think that's just a time-bomb waiting in America dispelling the myth that the u.k. is always 10 years behind the u.s. |

| Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This means the dichotomy of addiction to me. It also is a lament for the capitulation to that addiction and an admission that what was his life is no longer. There's a strong personal betrayal there as well but I don't know who from. Reading too much into it I'd call it catalystic if that's a word. It could be a strong affirmation that the life that the betrayer was killing was not the one intended. |

| Elliott Smith – Southern Belle Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
After reading the books have to say this about the suffocation his mother suffered in the hands of ES's step-dad. It's also a naive interpretation of adult relationships comitted to vinyl by a wronged party. That said it is a powerful argument and a musical gem. The fervour towards the end is painful and is as close to actually hitting someone - I know he picked fights with pub bullies according to the prose - that I think he came. As angry as the song is I think it's impotent. It's the rage of the helpless and small. I love it. |

| Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Is it not a reply to a previous discussion that we will never be party to? Is the beauty of the lyrics not that they are deliberately nebulous and therefore open to multiple intrerpretations? That said lyriclover's interpretation is good. A reviewer of heartbreak should understand the subject and speak, as Justin however obscure, from the heart. |

| Bon Iver – The Wolves (Act I and II) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The video shows and more importantly lets you hear the sparks of the fire in a winter landscape, and more percussion comes from chopping wood and chansaws. The doggedness of the video reflects the enforced busyness that follows an emotional upheaval. He's still doing what needs to be done regardless of how hollowed out he feels. The regret is being beaten like a panel by a drunk. Amazingly cinematic even without the video. |

| This is what I want at my funeral. A heady mix of vaudeville, regret and vigour. | |
| Low – Hatchet Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Have to agree with Quis on this one. Although there may never have been a square go between the two they were complicit in the media-myth making that allowed their camps to cross and then mingle. They were more aware of the media than most who are posting nearly 28 years after JL's death for chrissakes! Anyway, that's my humble grumble. Great song whatever way you slice it. |
