I thought maybe the true friend was heroin or something like that. Or depression. I see the chorus as bleak sarcasm. Our interactions are meaningless and pointless. No one listens to anyone. Yet the song is so beautiful. I am reminded of Coco Rosie for some reason. |

it has multiple levels. i don't think it's just about the movie plot. and perhaps the movie plot itself was a metaphor for escaping small town life (just speculating here...) |

here's my version: the song is sad. it's about her relationship with an ex. the bell represents his discontent or desire for someone/something else. the boat journey is their path through life. when the bell returns it means he dumps her. "you would have seen me through/but I could not undo that desire". the bird and the lip of fire? not sure, but i love it. no it's not about her harp you muppet. |
