This song is clearly about heroin... Every place in the song he says "Into the flood again", he is talking about a rush or flood that Heroin users feel about 15 seconds after they inject the drug. People are right, the last six songs on Dirt are about the cycle of addiction that a junkie faces as a Herion user. First in Junkhead, where he's talking about a new friend introduced him to an old favorite, and he's talking about how he does it alot... That's where a heroin addict is chasing the high. Second is dirt, where his life is spiraling out of control, and he's feeling suicidal. I think he's actually talking to the heroin through out the song. When he's talking about "you are so special, you have the talent to make me feel like dirt" just sort of makes sense. Third is Godsmack... I think this is one where he's talking about a "get high" buddy or girlfriend, and how they don't care for people who wonder, and cast aside all who care in favor of the drug. Also how they've grown fonder for the horse (White horse = heroin). Then how they've left everyone who cares behind, including him. Finally saying that they will die if they keep using, and some people can't handle their sickness, and some people's god is smack... Fourth is Hate to Feel... is clearly all about being sober and hating to feel the pain of being sober because it hurts. He says in there (Gotta Change, set a date), like he wants to get into rehab... and then how he gets high (thin my blood now), and wants to rest. Also there's the disappointment of him never wanting to be like his old man, a junkie... he used to be curious and now it's sustenance, so he can't live with out the drugs. Fifth is Angry Chair, where he's going through Re-hab. He's angry because he's hurting, and feeling like the walls are stifling him. His stomach is hurting from withdrawls. He's having halcinations in the mirror where he's molded in clay and his face is changing shapes. He's afraid. The shadows of candles are dancing and he's sweating in the angry chair. The little boy made a mistake, by ever trying to drug, and his pink cloud dreams are turning gray, all that he wants to do is to play (get high), but he better pray to make it through. So he was basically struggling and loosing his mind during rehab. Then the last one was Would? Which is basically after rehab, and he's broken by his master - heroin... Teach thee on child of love hereafter is basically a reference to Jesus, and how he was supposed to follow that path, but he got into the flood again... Meaning that he's using again, and so he made a big mistake, try to see it once his way. He's high, and trying to explain it to someone that loves him. (Have I run too far to get home?) Means do you still love me? (Have I gone? And left you here alone?) Means have I left you and left you behind. (If I would, could you?) This one is confusing, but after a lot of thought it started to make sense... Because basically he's asking if I would go back to Rehab, could you? Crazy depth on the lyrics, and the whole plan of the album... JC |

To me this song is all about the struggle he's facing with Heroin. The song tempo changes from when he's sober and suffering, to when he's high, mellow and doesn't care... "What the hell am I? Thousand eyes, a fly; Lucky then I'd be; In one day deceased" Means that he's suffering and in pain, and lucky if he died... "I can feel the wheel, but I can't steer; When my thoughts become my biggest fear; Ah, what's the difference, I'll die; In this sick world of mine" Means he's out of control when he's high, but what does it matter, because he'll die because addiction "What the hell am I? Leper from inside. Inside wall of peace. Dirty and diseased" Means that he is sober and suffering and feeling like a leper, dirty and diseased... "Can you see the end? Choke on me my friend. Must to drown these thoughts. Purity over rot" Means he's contemplating death, and then thinking that he has to stop thinking like that and pray for help... "Yeah, though I walk through the valley of rape and despair. With head high and eyes alert. I tread on a plane of many. We who are of good nature and intention, But cannot touch on the dark. Recesses of memory And pain learned, so come walk With me, feel the pain, And release it..." To me this is like the heroin users prayer, and basically why they recruit friends to use with them... "What the hell am I? Worn eroded pride. Saddened 10 miles wide. I'm gonna let it slide." Means he's sober, suffering, and his ego is hurt, super depressed, but he's going to let it slide when he gets high... It's pretty cool how they use the tempo change to make the distinction of what their thoughts are when sober and high... Heroin is some bad shit... |
