Okay i have to respectfully disagree with the interpretations of sin/god and a cliche relationship song. I feel its more a reflection upon his own life. The something up ahead could be his future. The coma of factories (his job/ working career) wont last as he strives for.. something.. be it success with his music or just an acceptance that it wont last as death is inevitable. The latter part of the song reflects this further 'climb what you can' whilst you have the chance to and 'the smell stays' reflect how your decisions and choices shape your destiny. I think overall its a song about hope, the future, optimism and inevitability. I'd also agree slightly with the 'god' theory in the closing lines as they suggest maybe a defiance to believe or maybe its that in the end of his life he can accept this as a posibility.. Just thoughts though, should mean something different to everyone. Kyle |

Awesome interpretation dude.. I think you nailed it. I particularly like the recurrence of thematic words in this to help paint the metaphorical picture such as 'prophets', 'gospel', 'rebellion', 'emperor', 'heaviest chains' and 'empty tombs'. I agree with saranwrapfanatic, nice conclusions and well articulated. Good job. I think even if you 'dislike' politics you have to see its relevance in this song.. I read somewhere as well that this album Sam planned on tackling wider themes and whilst avoiding a propaganda style protest record he did have some commentary re: Americans re-electing Bush. Its a shame not many song-writers comment on the political endeavours of the UK. Its all about new shoes and being drunk in a club with the music over here... dumb, just dumb. As always though other peoples interpretations hold up so it's really about what the song means to you. KwahDB |

How people can be getting so heated over this seems ridiculous and in a sense counterproductive to the existance of this site! Negatyve i agree with you.. The lyrics are shrouded with metaphor and poetic creativity and therefore each interpretation deserves its airing if backed by whats actualy written in the song.. Personally i doubt it is to do with the war. However if you cannot see how people have arrived at that interpretation then your are very naive and close-minded. I just want to say good job guys.. I'm a musician myself and really struggle day to day knowing that so many people dont really see what music has the potential to unleash.. (most *chart music* seems to merely deal with bored, spent topics and oddly enough about being drunk in clubs.. this sickens me. These people have the ability to speak to millions and thats what they choose to say? christ..) Sorry about that rant! Just to know that theres people out there discussing things like this brings me hope that people will understand my own music and *fingers crossed* one day discuss things in much the same way. Have to disagree strongly with this notion that the lyrics are not something to be noted and merely a variety of lexus chosen almost at random as their sounds moulds nicely with the sound of the music.. Justin is not that shallow and wouldn't write like that.. i think anyway.. In terms of what the feathers mean... my theory is that its a reference to a disguise.. It's a topic that's dealt with alot and is often portrayed as a metaphor relating to masks. In this use i think the feathers form the plume and its.. ya know beautiful and attractive.. but the fact that they are gluey shows how its fake. They've been stuck on. It could be him saying that he has constantly had to pretend to be someone else to fit in or to just meet peoples demands.. Could be way off but i feel that fits in with his reasons for writing this whole album and the circumstances in which it was written. Thanks =) KWahDB |

I was thinking that since the song clearly has an existential element within it that the reference to 'Mary' could be a tongue-in-cheek stab/joke at the religious connotations of Mary.. this song means so much to me i got some of the lyrics tattoed on my wrist.. Its on their myspace =) Yeah Totallymortal i think you nailed it. While it is a nostalgic poem dealing with things that we go through in mid teenage years its also quite personal to Jerry and the band as its a manifestation of their dreams and what better way to declare that than them all screaming it on stage together.. perfect. mk04m i've thought that in several of lydia's songs there has been underlying drug references too.. The 'waiting' and 'changing' in this song could be inrelation to a drug dependency or an overcoming of an addiction.. Having said that all the theories hold their own truths so far.. Yeah.. this song is incredible.. When i was fucked on shrooms the other night i was sure this was the meaning of life.. lol now im not so sure but still... "We bludgeon the cut To open the scab We burn off our roots And pretend that we're sad Repeat Until we believe That this is the life that we lead." I love that part.. I believe its talking about making things worse.. bludgeoning the cut.. or perhaps a re-analysis of his situation.. Then all we do is repeat it untill we're sure that the thing that we believe makes us sad is definately the problem hence "..untill we believe that this is the life that we lead" TS lyrics are truely genious but its the delivery of the lyrics that makes the songs so poignant (sp?). This can be said for any song they've ever written im sure you'd all agree. Can't wait for Bad Luck. Oh and fuck the haters that bailed on the scars after hospital music.. you're just jealous that they are actually getting somewhere.. which to me seems selfish and pathetic.. TS will always have my support. Even if they somehow get on a major label.. KWahDB Whats with the applause at the end of this song too??? |

I agree with ItsJorge very much here. However i thought it was "Picture, papers, pencils, erasers" as in he's writing the words then erasing them.. a common side effect of trying to pen down his emotional status. Lots more typical TS reference to drugs, in particular weed in this song.. "Wine and words, my pens and plants" Jerrys dealing with, or at least attempting to deal with his feelings for Liz. Shes a recurring name that appears within his works.. People that know Trophy Scars on a more personal level may be able to shed a little more light onto this.. It's difficult for me to have a personal insight when i live all the way across the altlantic in the UK. More comments please! KWahDB |

I cant believe how few trophy scars songs have comments on.. and where they do the comments are like and i quote: "the yelling in this song sounds like spongebob" christ this website is ideal for TS fans.. write your opinion! Without really delving into this song to deeply as i feel i need the whole album to fully understand its meaning you can tell its a very intimate, personal song to jerry. I mean literally look how many times he says 'I'!! It seems he still carries the stigmas of the problems raised within alphabets.. Generally centred around ex-lovers, drugs, religion and how he fits into all this.. Ill comment again when ive thought about it some more..
