"All I had hoped for, I kept inside your car. The rabbit in the barn." I think the rabbit is actually a VW Rabbit. I'm serious. It would make sense. You could EASILY fit a VW Rabbit in a barn. Hell, you could probably fit 10 VW Rabbits in a barn... given the barn is big enough for 10 VW Rabbits. And also, a literal rabbit would make no sense in the stanza. Also, I thought it was "For I am the ugly osprey." I was thinking, "This song is great, it has so many bird references." But now I see it is, "For I am the ugliest prey." I can't help but be disappointed. But my love of this song and Sufjan quickly overshadows my disappointment. |

So from skimming, no one has mentioned this. You guys covered the metaphors but I think the literal story is talking about one of those bug zapping lanterns: "as the Moon rose and the hour grew late...'who can carry back here the Great Mystery that's lit once again?'...(the Prof. Beetle) he crawled on all six, as his wings had been burned...(the Lieutenant) 'I had no choice, please believe, but retreat. it was bright as the sun, but with 10x the heat! it cracked like the thunder and bloodshot my eyes. Tho smothered with sticks it advanced undeterred as it carelessly cast an ash cloud to the sky" Bug Zapper lanterns come on at night, burn bugs, are bright, and hot (to a bug at least). They crack like thunder. It is covered with a screen to let bugs in, but human hands out (tho smothered with sticks). Humourous to think about a bug zapping lantern from a bug's perspective. But I think you guys nailed the metaphors! Ethan. |

I'm pretty sure William is a human and also the Queen's son and he is in love with Margaret who was taken by the fawn-thing who is the rake's son who's body he burned. Later in the album it says that the queen made the fawn from a jar of ashes (that would be the rake's son). The Queen isn't happy about her son loving another women (albeit a different kind of love). That's why she made the fawn shape shifter to steal margaret. Then william asks permission in this song to go out for the night (secretly so he can steal margaret back.) That's my two cents (not adjusted for inflation;) Godspeed. |

I don't want to come across as the guy who ruins posts with off-base negative comments...trust me, I love Anberlin! Its in my Top three favourite bands, but this is the one and only "Anberlin Original" (i.e. excluding covers) that I can't stand! If i'm paying attention while listening to New Surrender, I try to skip it. That being said, I'm glad you guys like it and that it means something to you, in fact, it reminds me of my childhood. Its just the musical side (the tune) of it that I don't like. Lyrics, as always, are great. I'll try not be a downer anymore. ;) Godspeed. |

yeah, I'm pretty sure the third and fourth lines go: fall asleep ahhh ooohhh. Then he says something low that I can't make out later in the song. It has something to do with sleep, but I can't tell what else. |

So, this probably doesn't mean much in context to the song, but I looked up red priest and there was a Venetian priest who was known as "the red priest" (apparently because of his red hair) and he was a composer and virtuoso violinist. So there ya' go. Great song by the way. Ethan. |
