There were no lyrics for this song and, with the 28th anniversary of Richard Manuel's suicide just passed, I felt it was worth writing them down as a personal homage to him. This song is sweet and morbid in that it includes details of his last night in that hotel after The Band had performed a show on 3/4/86 - "where is my belt" because he hung himself with his belt in the shower, "the band is swinging just like me" obviously a reference to his hanging body and the bridge talks about the moment he hung himself... "my body falls, my fingers drop, etc." |

This truly is a beautiful song. I saw Dylan twice this past summer and he sounded great. the second show he played a lot of classic songs but, of course, with a different twist on them. I can see how this song could be about Jeff Buckley but although he drowned in the Mississippi river that night, he was in Memphis wasn't he? |
