My Interpretation/Explanation: “If you've ever been alone, you'll know dark blue If you've ever been alone, you'll know, you'll know “ I think that this shows that ‘dark blue’ in the song, like in most cases, symbolizes depression and loneliness. I also think that when it talks about the ambulance and the flood, and the power lines, it is also talking about difficult times and things falling apart. “Have you ever been alone in a crowded room? When I'm here with you” But I think that this song is about finding someone who can help you through the bad times that are seen as ‘dark blue.” I think that this shows how even though you may feel alone even when you’re around others and may feel like you don’t fit in, the person is saying that now he/she is there with you and you are no longer the only one left out. That person is saying that they will be there to help you thru the bad times. “We were boxing, we were boxing the stars We were boxing,you were swinging from Mars” This means that the couple was feeling on top of the world, like nothing could stop them, and they were trying to reach an even higher level. “Slow down, this night's a perfect shade of Dark blue, dark blue” I think that this song means that you are going through hard times and that normally you would feel depressed and lonely, but because you have that special person with you it all goes away and you are able to see that ‘dark blue’ as something beautiful as apposed to something negative… “I said the world could be burning till there's nothing but dark blue Just dark blue” ..and that nothing else matters except for that one special person, even if everything else falls apart and nothing is left but ‘dark blue’ as long as you still have that one special person in your life you will be ok. |

| I know that this has nothing to do with the song but, the first time I heard this song it reminded me of Sleepless In Seattle, they way the lyrics go :“To the sleepless, this is my reply: I'll write you a lullaby” because it just instantly reminded me of the way the guy in the movie was depressed about the death of his wife and had trouble sleeping so he became known as ‘Sleepless In Seattle” and when the women wrote to him they would address him as ‘Sleepless In Seattle” just as Andy addresses this girl as “Sleepless” after she called him and asked her to write her a lullaby. | |

I’ve had issues with depression in the past and he’s my life and if we ever weren’t together I know that I would lose my mind and go back into depression and that I’d get put on meds for sure. My Interpretation/Explanation: “hammer & strings” - inside parts to a piano “But I miss you like hell. I still hear you in this Old piano, oh yeah.” An old ex-girlfriend of Andy’s calls him up, they haven’t talked in a while. He tells her that he misses her and that when ever he plays his piano he is reminded of her, he used to write her songs before and play the piano for her. “She says, "Andy, I know That we don't talk as much But I still hear your ghost In these old punk rock clubs” “I don't think that I'll close my eyes 'Cause lately I'm not dreaming So what's the point in sleeping? It's just that at night, I've got nowhere to hide” She tells him that even thought they don’t talk much anymore she is still reminded of him and thinks about him. She needs comfort; she is very depressed and is having trouble sleeping, she asks him to write her a song to comfort her. “She says, "Andy, the doctors Prescribed me the pills. But I know I'm not crazy. I just lost my will. So why am I, why am I Taking them still?" She tells him that she has been put on meds, possibly implying that she is depressed and may have suicidal tendencies. She knows that she isn’t a crazy person, she is just having some problems, she knows she doesn’t need the meds but she doesn’t know why she is taking them anyway. “Come on, write me a song Give me something to trust.” “Give me something to believe in, A breath from the breathing So write it down, I don't think that I'll close my eyes 'Cause lately I'm not dreaming So what's the point in sleeping?” She asks him to write her a lullaby to comfort her and help her sleep, she wants something to give her hope. She tells him that she wants him to write something with meaning, she doesn’t want him to just write anything. “It's just that at night, I've got nowhere to hide” This could also imply that she is depressed because very often depression worsens at night time, especially when you are lonely. “Just promise you won't let it be Just the keys that you touch." This might also imply that she wants him to do more than just write her a song. “To the sleepless, this is my reply: I'll write you a lullaby” & he agrees to help her and write her a lullaby I love this song, its so hauntingly beautiful; definitely my favorite track on the CD. I cried the first time I heard it; my boyfriend’s name is Andy and he is the one who got me into Jack’s Mannequin, our song is Dark Blue |
