I also adore the pedal Steel solo that leads into lady of the well. I've always considered the songs a medley of sorts. |

Another reference to wearing a scarf just like a noose is Isadora Duncan who returned to the US with Russain husband and was shunned. She died when her long scarf was caught in the wheel of her car and she was strangled to death.
"us" also could be US as in United states. also statue of liberty was made of copper which doesn't rust, but I like the immigrant take on that, which someone alluded to. I kind of like the idea someone put forth about Rushmore. I kind of see the "new ones are slave labor you can keep" as being cheap immigrant labor. My take on a den of thieves is the current administration. I don't think she had a conscious message in mind though. We project our own souls on her. She is so alluring! |

She cracks me up when she sings "And then one morning I woke up and thought oedipus.." She takes this very serious text and injects us into it in a whimsical way. She's just scewing around with the story. Its weird but this was her first song that hooked me, that and seeing her CBS Sunday morning interview which slayed me. I never quite got her until I saw that. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KpG-JIxaxvw |

| Regina Spektor – Field Below Lyrics

I do not think she writes for message or meaning, it is poetry and inspires different images for each listener. For instance I imagined a WWII pilot who has mean hit and as he plunges slowly to the ground imagines the life and love that he will never experience and perhaps if he only had a field below to land on his life could be saved. Now I know thats not what she was writing, But thats where I went. |

I think the song reflects on her own experience of being an artist in such a gritty place as the world we live in. I think her creative psyche (in latin means butterfly or breath) , her muse is partly her own inner girl. It would seem that the cardinal years in her life were those years when she arrived in NYC and that a lot of her "creative juice" comes from those Years. It is also just lovely poetry and very funny too. I don't think she had a message accept her fun with the images. I adore this song! |
