Perhaps a bit too literal (after all, this may be how the song was conceived of in the first place), but I think this is a song with an unreliable narrator. I think it's a man watching a girl in the mall who catches his eye, who is a perfect stranger. And he's making up a story about her, based upon impressions and small acts or mannerisms. I love the "All I see... is me..." It's the rounded multiple-mirror setup just outside a fitting room. Maybe that's where he first saw her. Looking at herself in the mirror, in a red dress. |

For some reason, I keep thinking that this song is about someone who has a special friendship, or a confused identity, with a scarecrow. The face with the three-times-used string, the stump, and the pigeons saying things, all play into a scarecrow theme. |
