I really enjoyed the song's view on celebrating as opposed to mourning. "And all of us are meant for the fire, but we keep rising up and walking the wires. So when we go below, don't lose us in mourning." In other words, we were all going to die, but life does end at death. We will celebrate so "dance" with us instead of crying.

Regina Spektor – Summer in the City Lyrics 15 years ago
I love how she mixes her sad, musical tone with the almost-comical lyrics. Just like Missy Higgins "The River" where the music is rather relaxed but the lyrics are about a girl who must have drowned herself in a river.

I completely agree that this song is the perfect follow up for Katie. And I love the combination of sad lyrics with a relaxed rhythm. It makes it seem as though the speaker is sad for the loss but understands that life still goes on. Regina Spektor uses that same method in "Summer in the City" where the rhythm and mood of the music is very melancholy but the lyrics can easily be viewed as raunchy and a little dirty at some points.

I feel that the song is meant to be funny yet sincere at the same time. The beginning
"Summer in the city
means cleavage, cleavage, cleavage"
(Summer In The City means one girl after another.)

But then it goes on

...
"Summer in the city
I'm so lonely, lonely, lonely

I've been hallucinating you, babe
at the backs of other women
And I tap 'em on the shoulder
and they turn around smiling but
there's no recognition in their eyes"

To me it sounds more like a note her boyfriend wrote to her.
The boyfriend says how he came across many distractions in a simple and loose language
but how he they had no effect on him because his heart was still with her.

I never looked at it that way. getnakeynakey

But i did look at it, at first, as if Samson was a child she knew. Because of the wonder bread

I agree with buffyx. I too read the story about Samson and Delilah and how god's spirit and power was in his hair.

It seems that Regina Spektor puts herself into a modern version of this story. She is Delilah and Samson is her lover. She starts off singing about his hair in the beginning leaving the listeners clueless as to what she was talking about. But she then explains how she cut it. Thus, when she was explaining that his hair was long before, she was saying that Samson was a power man before she met him. She sings how it was because of her that Samson was weak; "oh i cut his hair myself one night." "couldn't bring the columns down"

In her version of the song she was singing how she was able to break through his shell and make him vulnerable. But "he told {her} that {she} done alright and kissed {her} til the morning light"; for he didn't care about his strength; he cared about her.

But in the first verse,
she sings "Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth. but I have to go."
I think she broke up with Samson after already breaking his heart.
