Sounds like someone expressing and thoughts and hopes that someone they like will confess mutual feelings for them on their day at the beach together. They might both be sleepy or hungover as suggested by heavy heavy (eye)lids. After a while it seems like the other person doesn't feel the same way and the narrator didn't have the courage to directly ask (a sunburn later im a coward and a fool) so they just make small talk. The narrator ends up reading trashy fictional novels. |

abusive relationship which continues even after the narrator has been sucked dry of energy/hope. The relationship is possibly kept together by illegitimate children which the narrator/partner are responsible for: i heard cowbirds call us home (cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds so they won't have to do the incubating) |

any thoughts on what it means though? ?
I'm thinking it's a message between the band members about what's going through their minds as they're about to start playing a song, and also how they feel after the show 'A hundred linger in my ear, Measure fortune killing time' |
