Eric Hutchinson – Rock & Roll Lyrics 17 years ago
This song sounds very lighthearted and the video is great fun (a bunch of people waiting in line for popsicles and ice cream). The reality of it is that it's about two very shallow people who are after the same thing - sex. And they'll do whatever it takes to get it. It's more or less an updated version of the old Jimmy Buffet song "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw?" Eric Hutchinson's approach is a little less direct, but nevertheless, it has exactly the same meaning.
Not much depth or philosophizing in this song, but fun to listen to.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
Something I would like to add to my previous comments. Although I mentioned that the melody in Viva La Vida is somewhat dark, I also find it almost uplifting at times. A very interesting mix. (Maybe represents hope for the future?).

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
I think "the7keys" nailed it. I was thinking Viva La Vida was about Caesar or Napolean. But some of the lyrics don't fit with these particular dictators. So it's about revolutions in general (and possibly as "the7keys" stated, "artistic" revolution).
There is a great deal of information in this song. There are religious and moral connotations. It's a tyrant's introspective look at his life and how he may be ultimately judged.
Pillars of salt and pillars of sand most likely represents a once powerful dictatorship which eventually fell due to deception, a lack of morality, and lack of empathy for those being ruled.
There also seems to be a certain degree of remorse by the author. Being alone, sweeping the streets. He now understands what it is like to be a peon. And he realizes he made a lot of people live the existence he now faces. He also realizes that he may have started out with good intentions but became someone or something he wasn't expecting, almost as if he had no control over his fate. The irony of course is that he was considered an all powerful ruler. So he had total control as a dictator, yet he had no control over his destiny. Very deep stuff.
As far as the music, well, let's just say I liked this song the first time I heard it. Great instrumentals, and a haunting and somewhat dark melody. The vocals are superb, perfect for the message(s) Cold Play is trying to convey.
Great song!
