The Dodos – God? Lyrics 15 years ago
Saying there is no good without evil I do have a problem with, allow me to illustrate:
You want to enyoy a really good peice of cake right? too bad, because you can't tell if it's good because you've never chewd up a mouthfull of asprins before, seem logical?
NO it doesn't.

Another thing, in the bible account where Jesus is temted by satan (luke 4:1-13) Chist is clearly addressing another person, furthermore, Jesus could not have been being tempted by some evil inside of himself, because he was a perfect man. Therefore the devil must be a real entity. There really is no substitute for actually cracking open a bible and reading it, if you really want to know what it teaches.

The Dodos – God? Lyrics 15 years ago
So, he doesnt exist, yet he's responsible for suffering, convienient. Sounds more like it's people projecting whatever they want to believe to me, but let me say this: anybody who says god doesn't exist hasn't looked at a flower.

Blue Scholars – Joe Metro Lyrics 15 years ago
thats the part I really like too. never noticed it for a long time, it's a sleeper line (bad pun I know). all in all, pretty vivid descriptions of what it's all about rocking the bus system in south seattle (I'm like the only white kid thats ever on there ha).

Blue Scholars – 50,000 Deep Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is no doubt about the WTO riots that happened in seattle in 1999. My favorite part is when he says shell shocked, cause paul shell was the mayor of seattle at the time, cool reference work. I like how this is a fun kinda lazy sounding song when it's maybe the most serious one on bayani content wise.

The Dodos – The Season Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is more about him working through a feeling than the relationship itself. the way the song changes lends to my perception in this way:
first part, sounds and feels like longing missing the person sometimes, he acknowleges that it is a passing feeling from the beginning.
As the song progresses he endulges the want he feels for that person (We do this for the season). He peaks during the part about crossing the desert (he's getting control of himself).
the end I can think of in one of two ways:
He either gets over his sadness and is ready to rock again, or he goes into a fit cause he can't deal. I think it's the first because he mentions waking up (presumably from the one of those "cirtain days").

Does this bands music make anyone else sway involuntarily?
I think this song is saying: "being with you is what makes me beautiful, but it also makes me worried and restless". Whoever writes the lyrics for this band seems to require a healthy dose of confirmations in their relationships, or they start to get scared. I can relate.

Seems like it's about intimacy, and perhaps he's questioning if their idea of commitment is the same or not.

This Town Needs Guns – 26 Is Dancier Than 4 Lyrics 16 years ago
I must admit I wasn't too down with the title of this song before I counted it out. I think the writer is surely using a double meaning between the numbers of timing and respective ages he's reflecting on. He's thinking about how they've grown so much much but progressed so little, and feeling discouraged by that.
I'd like to point out that its one thing to use odd timings and cut/paste beats in songs, it's quite another to make it sound a gorgeous as this, every member of this band gets an A+ in my book for techinical skill, Not to mention writing and arrangment. Plus draws spirographic images on my eyelids when I close them.

Regina Spektor – Hero Lyrics 16 years ago
I think a big part of the message involved in this song, as well as the movie (500 days) is the idea of the media filling people with synthetic stories/idealism's until they can no longer speak there mind or evoke a genuine emotional response to reality. The things they sell as "successful" in media are so hyped that even if someone gets that, they are disappointed. As an artist it's hard because even if you try to be honest and real to yourself and your art (powerful), people will just consume it for their own selfish pleasure and move on, and all you've really done is add to the landfill of cliché.
I's really hard to eat well and provide good food for others when fast food is serving billions.
(it's a metaphor)

Grandaddy – Jed The Humanoid Lyrics 16 years ago
ha, my buddy just picked this album out of the scuffs and scratches bin at our local record store. really love all the lyrics on it. this song as well as jed's other poem make me wonder whether or not
the alcoholism refrence is litteral (which can make sense) or metaphoric like the rest of the story seems to be. this disc kinda reminds me of yoshimi battles the pink robots by flaming lips.

Darryl Worley – Have You Forgotten? Lyrics 16 years ago
Romans 12:17 Return evil for evil to no one. Provide fine things in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, as far as it depends upon YOU, be peaceable with all men. 19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but yield place to the wrath; for it is written: “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says Jehovah.” 20 But, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by doing this you will heap fiery coals upon his head.” 21 Do not let yourself be conquered by the evil, but keep conquering the evil with the good.- new world translation of the holy scriptures.

I don't understand how a country and an artist, and the majority of those who make up the united states military can claim to be Christians, can have such flagrant disregard for the principles of the book they claim to follow.

The Decemberists – The Engine Driver Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't see much of a precedent for this to be a "girl song", rather I think when he says "you" in the chorus, he is addressing the writer/artist part of himself. essentially he was born with a drive to create artistic expression, like the others in the song (him or someone else, doesn't matter for my meaning) he has been given a seemingly certain role to play in the world. by saying "if you don't love me let me go" and "trying to rid you from my bones", it seems that he is hoping that someday he can finally solve whatever it is he's trying to reconcile inside of himself with his art. maybe he can create his finest masterpiece and be done,
Being perfectionists as we musicians generally are (and critical) its nearly inconceivable to make something perfect from our own perspective.

There is a vid at this link of them playing live on the Seattle ferry.
One can clearly tell that he says "double dreams tend to land big blows" and "break my toes".
Interesting that the writer makes a number of feet references on this album... Metaphoric for?
I think this song is directly related to conquering kids as well as others on there for that reason.
wonder what is meant by "western bed". western thinking and morals in general maybe.

Damien Rice – Rootless Tree Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song has far less going on than it gets credit for. The intent is to use the swearing to really drive home the feeling, but it's really overemphasized. This song is the person who puts three exclamations after everything they write, the whole message just sorta washes out, the way the song builds is supertypical and generic as well. The reason I'm irritated by it most (and why I'm even bothering to type his) is because I really wanted to like this song, this whole time I keep thinking "if this had more substance I'd be just great", but as it stands I'd compare this song to to say... toaster waffles, tasty, just no nutrition.

Headphones – Pink and Brown Lyrics 17 years ago
I think all ya'lls are wrong. I don't think it's a sex or drug reference. Rather it's just about the pink and brown color scheme that was so trendy not to long ago.
(clothing fashion ya know). and as such he's using it as a metaphor for her pretentious attitude and stonewalling him. so when he says:
"All the stolen kisses
All the pink and brown
And if you want to end it,
you just pull the plug and shut it down"
he's just saying stop worrying so much about your image and just be honest with me. I'm seeing him play on oct 14 so I'll try and ask him.
besides the sex thing doesn't really fit the rest of they lyrics anyway.

Manchester Orchestra – Alice and Interiors Lyrics 17 years ago
I see the similarity in the line, but I don't think the two are connected. also, the riff is great, and the off time of the drumming is awesome.
I think it's about a friend of all his friends that everyone is worried about impressing. this person is considered talented, but is pretentious and prideful.
the writer is resentful because he's the only one who sees through how phony this person is.
He's saying 'your probably not that bad', but in the end he drops all his pretenses and lets his real feelings come out.
yeah I'm glad I don't write your shitty songs!
that part always makes me smile, great song,
this album is incredible.

The Shins – Girl Inform Me Lyrics 17 years ago
um..in these lyrics-
'but your lips when we speak
are the valleys and peaks of a mountain range on fire.
so let me walk these coals till you believe'.
he seems to be asking her to kiss him. IMO
and all in all thats a pretty cool way to say that.
oh, also he follows with 'I can cut the mustard', meaning, yes I am a good enough kisser? possibly yes.

Copeland – Love Affair Lyrics 17 years ago
I really like the drum kick after the first chorus, and the lyrics at the beginning are good, but honestly if the song ended before the change it would just be so so for me. as it is I absolutely love this song. my fave on eat sleep.
a broken hearted girl questioning what she did wrong to kill the relationship (I've been there). I think the whole first part is in her perspective, and she's saying "just let me love who I want!".
But the second part puts so much hope and grace into it. And I really dig the sentiment about not calling the fools who date smart, or lose your rationality in the wake of emotions.
In my opinion, people really have no business dating until they have the maturity to be emotionally self sufficient while single. I think thats the sort of idea he's referring too here. just because you can date doesn't mean you should, I see allot of my friends set themselves up for heartache this way. anyway, I'll stop preaching now :-)
the French horn is a great addition, and the off time piano at the end is great. perfect song.

Death Cab for Cutie – Army Corps of Architects Lyrics 17 years ago
The singer is the one breaking it off. he thinks the urn is half empty, she thinks it's half full. 'Leaving the central state from shallow ground' seems to indicate the need to leave because the relationship is lacking depth.
'Home in the valley, but the rent's paid south' means he cares about this person but it's become to emotionally taxing to stay. (back rent= old issues that they can't clear up?) anyhow, just wanted to comment on the first few lines cause nobody did yet.

This song means allot to me personally. DCFC played a big part in a serious relationship i was in once, and this song is the only song of theirs I've ever cried too. it was at sunset in summer at edmonds WA watching the ferry boat land. I wasn't depressed or anything it was just an incredibly beautiful moment. I came to find out she had had that exact same experience totally separate from knowing me once too. same place, same time, same song. so it was just sortof a really cool thing we shared together . I Don't listen to death cab much anymore. love them though.

The Pale Pacific – Sucker Punch Lyrics 17 years ago
he says 'I will wreck you' following right into 'it's what we loved in this family'.
also 'I'm solid it's just that nobody knows'.
To me I relate this song to how I feel sometimes about being the only sane/functional person in my family. The end part would be about myself and my siblings wanting to break the cycle and learn to be better than what we have become but we grow apart and don't really have the skills to stop it.
I like how it starts off all smooth and quiet and by the end he's pretty much yelling it. solid song.

The Pale Pacific – Fall To Place Lyrics 17 years ago
this is the final track on what I consider to be a perfect album. love this song.
I like that most of the songs on this album aren't about romance (at least not apparently), but you could interpret it that way i suppose.
To me it might be about how the band had dreams of being big and later realized that it wasn't going to happen and thats ok.
also the writer is reflecting on past mistakes and noticing how it effected him (or them) but is realizing in the long run everything has worked out for the better.

Great build, great song, great band, flawless album. if you like northwest indie type music it's a must listen.

Death Cab for Cutie – Pictures in an Exhibition Lyrics 17 years ago
It's probably unrelated, but this reminds me of a poem by Charles Bukowski called 'the deathly bravo'. It's about a bunch of prudes who go to a music concert in L.A. and act all impressed and think how 'cultured' they are. Then they go down to their cars and drive home being jerks on the freeway. the phrase 'pictures AT an exhibition' is right in there. Also the fact that Gibbard seems to despise Los Angeles is a similarity (see , Why You'd Want To Live Here,).

Like i said; probably unrelated, but interesting. If you want to read the poem here it is: http://bukowski.net/vault/display_man.php?show=poem1977-12-21-the_deathly_bravo.jpg&inbook=&inmag=The%20Wormwood%20Review%20Vol.%2018%20No.%204%20Issue%2072&onpage=153
