"It doesn't matter just how long it takes Just to know we'll be back together And this time it's forever One step closer to heaven, baby Means one step closer to you There'll be no more livin' without you, baby I' m counting each minute till I'm back to you" seriously, i'm convinced this is 12 year olds singing about death. seriously. look at the lyrics. this is whack. |

Reading these comments, I suppose I'm the only person in the entire world who sees this song as written with the slightest touch of irony. It seems a little melodramatic, AT POINTS... 'Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head and as I climb into an empty bed' Given that Morrissey is celibate, I think the fact that he feels like he's/wants to be dying because he's climbing into an 'empty bed' is probably a LITTLE ironic? No? Maybe not. |

I too love the widow's voice. It's hilarious. Also, the voice of the mariner's mother in 'The Mariner's Revenge Song' is a good 'un. |

| The Decemberists – O Valencia! Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| 'this song is pretty straight-forward. i don't really think it was meant to be over-analyzed.', is exactly what I was going to say. Super straight forward, don't really think there's much hidden meaning in the lyrics. Story-telling song. | |

Possibly the only by The Decemberists I've never really thought about lyrically. I always kind of thought that, yes, it's unlike them to have meaningless lyrics, but, in this case it's exactly that. It seems quite a beautifully simple song without all the analysis. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think you can go into too much depth in working out meaning here. |

This is SUCH a fantastic song, why has it only got one page of comments? My favourite B&S track, by far. I cry everytime I hear it. I don't think it is to do with fitting in as such, more staying out of touch with yourself, if that makes any sense. 'And the moment will come when composure returns Put a face on the world, turn your back to the wall And you walk twenty yards with your head in the air.' I think the word 'composure' is key here, this person is always collected. In my opinion, it's about fitting in to a degree, but more about putting a face on and keeping up appearances, ignoring inner beauty and focusing instead on outer beauty, keeping graces and conducting themselves. 'And the puzzle will last until somebody will say "There's a lot to be done while your head is still young" If you put down your pen, leave your worries behind Then the moment will come, and the memory will shine' The puzzle being the way of life this person is living. They leave their worries behind, leave the appearances behind, find their inner self or whatever. The music itself compliments it beautifully, building up to the realisation moment, and the words 'Sleep the clock around' meaning that because they've left their troubles, found themselves, whatever, they can get a decent night's sleep, or be happy. Anyway, this is how I always saw it, and thought it was obviously to do with appearances, but I guess not. Eugh, long comment. Bet not one person reads it. Nevermind. |

| The Decemberists – A Cautionary Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |

'So be kind to your mother Though she may seem an awful bother And the next time she tries to feed you collard greens Remember what she does when you're asleep' The long pause between 'collard greens' and the next line is wonderful. Every time I hear that last line I giggle to myself. |
