Rise Against – The Strength to Go On Lyrics 17 years ago
This song begins with a 1984 feel:

"They have tampered with the locks
And your things they rearranged

'We propose a better way.'
Said the note they left behind"

the chorus is a fairly true statement of all people, being the sum of many a lie, but the emphasis is that the song sings of people particularly surrounded by lies and little truth to the point at which they have little they can truely be certain of. I like the point they make that people are who they are until they die or until they break under pressure. Everyone breaks down under torture it's just a matter of time and pain.

one of the more interesting themes of the song is the distrust of one of the people that accompany the main singer. He distrusts someone (the second person understood) because the look in their eyes but truly he's heard too many lies to really believe that they're really a liar despite the look in that person's eyes. run through a world of lies there's little to believe, so despite the belief that they aren't who they say they are they remain with the main singer despite the many times he tells the second person understood that he doesn't believe them.

Rise Against – The Dirt Whispered Lyrics 17 years ago
this isnt a post about how they arent the punk band they used to be. this isnt a forum for complaining about how poppy they now are, this is place to discuss what the song "the dirt whispered" means. for example what people thing the line "The dirt whispered, 'Child, I'm coming home.'" means.

please refrain from just using a site like this as another "punk" forum for bands that used to be "punk".

Rise Against – Hero of War Lyrics 17 years ago
i think it's unfair to simply assume that simply because the 1 acoustic song on the previous album sparked attention. It's just as possible they simply enjoy also doing acoustic songs along with regualr songs. It's a change of pace.

That being said.
The meaning of this song is to describe both the pride many soldiers have when making the choice to participate in the armed forces, as well as reflecting the horrific nature of humans to do terrible things even with the best of intentions in mind. It doesnt just pertain to soldiers, good people do bad things often when many people do, like in riots, in sexual situations, as well in wars. People tend to get caught away with the moment in many situations; good people who simply arent aware enough to know when they really ought to be taking a stand against their friends or coworkers in some of the moments that really matter.

I find the most interesting part of the song is the beginning and end when it is a referential lyric to a son about seeing the world.

He said, “Son,
Have you see the world?
Well, what would you say
If I said that you could?

This particular lyric means a lot to me, not because the line referes to seeing places that the son's nation has national interest but the part of the human condition the army/military can show you. I'm a member of the U.S. armed forces and i cant apologize for what people do in times of war but i do know that people are just people. As such this song means a lot to me.

Rise Against – Faint Resemblance Lyrics 17 years ago
this song sounds more like the moments where your actually comming to realize that a relationship isnt working out. The moment where you start putting together the pieces and hints drop previously but dont want the thought to coalesce in your mind, followed by all the drawn out thought that come after and those nights spent staying awake asking those million silly questions that you cant answer yourself, but cant actually bring yourself to ask the other person either.

Rise Against – Entertainment Lyrics 17 years ago
this song to me is simply an anthem of calling out commercialism and materialism as an ilusory reality which even in terms of getting paid doesnt really afford you the money you need for life (as life in a strict sense doesnt actually require money). One of the nice things about this song is the reaction in the third chorus section, the strung out carnival section, that entertainment is actually more than just entertainment to people who need something to distract from their own plights. It's fairly accurate to the real reason people engage in entertainment from the ancient greeks to now.

"Confined to pull-out quotes and hotel rooms" sounds to me like a criticism of pretentious artists, but i could be wrong. i'd love to hear what the rest of you think on it, as well as the line "They all scream California and it’s toppling empire" because i dont get much from it.

Rise Against – The First Drop Lyrics 17 years ago
i feel an important theme missed by interpretation is the allegories used pertaining to protest and how too often police put down protesters who arent violent.
"Here arm-in-arm
We parade these streets
And sing our songs

Is there even anything left to explain?
Am I really someone you need to restrain?
Can’t you listen to what we have to say?"

i think this song is more about how we, the voicless millions, ought to be protesting not just the government but the way of life. the life offered should be more than just putting food on our plates, and otherwise we should be trying to change things if that's all our lives are.

Rise Against – Join The Ranks Lyrics 17 years ago
i dont think this song is completely about drinking
"it's all well and done till
you question the choices in your life"
the second half of the chorus seems to suggest the person he's complaining about is perpetually drunk, not literally, but intellectually asleep. the type of people who can detail their "god-given rights" and think they're so smart, but really arnt awake and just get by though life "prescribed to a mediocre life". They just by what they've been told. I think the line "with your eyes glazed and half-smile" is talking about just that and not the person being drunk that second, since he couldnt remember what he did LAST night.

Rise Against – Collapse (Post-Amerika) Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about the continuance of American troops in Iraq, long after it seems clear that we should pull out. Additionaly that it was a mistake to go there in the first place but out of pride we could not admit selfish reasoning as a reason to go to war.
