This song is about convincing yourself you're okay and happy. It's about becoming addicted to the norm. Specifically, it's about a man, who has trapped himself within himself. Sleight of hand refers to the trickery he submits himself to. "Organized his few things. His coat and keys. And he knew realizations would have to wait." He comes back from "drifting" to assure himself, through trivial tasks, that life can wait. He has more important things to do. But really, deep inside, he has just given up, and understands he will die unhappy, having wasted his life. I believe Eddie deeply fears ever becoming this person. |
