Cole Porter – Night and Day Lyrics 17 years ago
This is only one of hundreds of songs Cole Porter composed. Every one rich in meaning and very simple. And if you listen closely, there is a very subtle wit to them that is charming. Yeah, they just don't write them like this anymore. That's one of the reasons why I'm turning to these songs more and more. Simplicity doesn't have to mean dull. Overcomplication is what is boring me.

Peter Murphy – Hit Song Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is song about spirituality or the longing for spirituality when it seems that none exists any more. All of us have a calling, something that we were put here to do. There are those that discover what that calling is; there are those others that never do. What Pete is saying here probably is describing the saddness of feeling like you have no purpose or meaning for your life and the joy you feel at finally knowing your purpose. The chorus is what clues you in to the goal of the lyrics: "Wash my face in fields of green; Take me to the stars for free; Point me to the high wire call; Wake me true and wake me all." These lines are a plea to a spiritual being for help and guidance to help know what life's purpose is. There is always something more to life than what is in our immediate frame of reference; we just need to stop and look once and a while.

Beautiful song and I loved it when I first heard it.

By far the most beautiful song ever written about mutual orgasm.

Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics 17 years ago
*chuckle* This song is definitely one for the guys. As a female I can relate but I've been guilty of the same things spelled out in the song. Gals, we are just as guilty of using guys for sex as they are. I'm not different. As one on the receiving and giving ends, I can completely relate to this song.

Death Cab for Cutie – The New Year Lyrics 17 years ago
I've been guilty of seeing New Year's Day as just another excuse to lose control and get drunk, get laid or whatever. Mostly just get drunk. Then I'd regret what I did the next day with nothing but a hangover to show for it. Bummer.

Death Cab for Cutie – What Sarah Said Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think any interpretations are needed. This one is heartbreaking and I'm sure any one can relate this song. I lost my brother a few years ago and it still hurts like hell. The only thing I can hope for was that he wasn't alone when he finally let go of all his pain and suffering and went quietly into the night but not alone. I hope someone was there to hold his hand while he let go of life. I think ultimately that's what we all hope for. This is so beautiful and heartfelt, like all their songs are.

Death Cab for Cutie – Brothers on a Hotel Bed Lyrics 17 years ago
The piano intro to this totally chokes me up everytime I hear it. This is by far (and I only have two cd's by these guys so far..poor me ;-) )the best song from Plans with my second favorite being I'll Follow You into the Dark. I was actually floored by the fact that Walla and not Gibbard. Kudos to Walla. This is a gem of a song.
As for my take on the meaning, poetry is a funny thing; it's open to many interpretations not one of them right or wrong. However, I do like the one that a couple of people have already mentioned before. That it's about a single person trying to come to terms with the fact that he or she is getting to face the eventual reality of the end of his or her life: "a beginning and an end". The 'brothers' of the song's title are the physical being and the spiritual being; the physical being showing signs of aging while the spiritual being is still youth "the youthful boy below". He doesn't realize he's aged until he catches his reflection. He is having trouble reconciling the fact that he has to face the death of his physical being letting go and setting free his spiritual one. The 'landlocked lovers' verse is metaphorical and I think it references the joining of body and spirit and the yearning to stay together but having to face ultimately being separated by death.

This song hits home from a number of different perspectives for me. It hits home the most for a character in the story I'm working on at the moment. He is a very old vampire and he has to watch as his lover goes to someone else. Their time together has to come to an end and he has difficulty coming to terms with it.
