First of all...I honestly don't think a better lyricist than Tim exists. This is such an amazing song...such raw emotion. And if you haven't checked out the acoustic version, its a must...it brought a tears to my eyes. |

First of all, rise against is the greatest band of our generation, ive loved them since "The Unraveling." As far as the song meaning goes....
It feels that "paper wings" signify false highs that someone has gotten in life, whether these highs are lust, money, drugs, or etc. "Paper wings" are a metaphor for things we hold dear in our lives that are really meaningless such as money, or a desire to be accepted, and when people finally attain these things, we sometimes feel as if we're headed in the right direction. However, these highs can only carry someone so far before they "burn up" and become useless, revealing their shallow value once again leaving the individual rendered helpless and many times alienated...hence "landing somewhere far from here with no one else around." The song seems to address this issue by taking the perspective of a person who is watching a loved one fail time and time again because that person can't realize their mistakes in persuing something that isn't valuable in life, and this person is tired of waiting for the one they love to come to their senses. |
