Conor Oberst – I Got the Reason #2 Lyrics 16 years ago
I think memory, and trying hold on to memories to hold on to (or recreate) the past, is a theme of the song:

"Don't let time rob you, hold onto your memories"

"In the last hard drive, in the satellites that kick and spin
You find that old footage so everything can live again"

"In the creased pages of a letter I've been trying to send"

This could be linked to getting older, moving to another stage in your life and not wanting to lose or forget what made the previous stage special. Memory comes up elsewhere on the album (e.g. reference to dementia). The reference to the elephant could also refer to memory, as long memory is traditionally attributed to elephants. The ostrich probably refers to burying your head in the sand, which could possibly be linked to the process of memory.

I think the reference to a 'witness' on Ten Women is also about recording or holding onto a particularly emotionally important part of the past, in that case a relationship, to know it was real. The line 'whose eyes will not run' refers to objectivity in this case.

The chorus seems to refer to the hope of finding an (possibly external) meaning to life, like the certainty provided by religious belief or maybe love. I think the "long Sunday drive... alone" refers to life without that kind of meaning. At least, I'm sure the Sunday drive is life, which is too long to be taken alone. The Sunday drive is not a religous reference, but ties in with the church bells.

This is my favourite song off the album and can make me cry, thinking about trying to hold on to the past.

Edith Cavell was a British nurse executed by the German Army in Brussels in 1915, for helping Allied soldiers escape to the Netherlands.
