first off the line is "why it's humbling to see them so.." and the other line is "a connection to the permanence of burning." this song is about the wish to be something better than a bunch of evolved monkeys destined for death and nothing more. Greg has always been on the fence as to whether there is more to life than the here and now (and rightly so for who can say?) and this song is about a longing to be more and a grounded reality check...to ensure that wishful thinking doesn't become truth. Greg is a brilliant lyricist. ...oh yeah and the last line for sure is "the lonely quest for meaning and the universe's dreaming." these corrections would make the song make sense. |

tonka has an interesting take on this song and it is about the problem of evil vs religious code, it's about God's seeming apathy in his violence and how that doesn't tend to lend creedence to the love of god. in short, God causes suffering and he doesn't care...and this is why Greg can't accept religion |

mrsquare has this nailed, it's about mutual isolation between the disillusioned man and his former colleagues. it's not specifically about relgion, though that is the best example as Greg tends to write about atheism and flaws in religious beliefs (kind of a reference to himiself as well really). |

alright first off the line is "by punishing myself" as in that's how he finds inner wealth (he, being the person described in te song...not the actual writer). Greg does a part 2 of this song on New Maps of Hell called Honest Goodbye. This song is about the isolation of a man misunderstood or just simply not understood at all whose depression and anger drive him to violence. Greg has a fascination with what makes a human being desire to harm others, he's a humanist. |

obviously this is a reference to religion and war. what Greg is saying here is that mankind finds any difference to war over (mother nation, blood, and religion). the first verse refers significantly to Biblical relgion as it is the contraversial holy text in the middle of more religious wars than any other...so it's the best example. "Someday, I'll see you high above the fields of mars" refers to Greg's belief that when we cast off our prejudice we'll cease our warring and ascend to a peaceful time..which makes sense but seems like a sad hope. honestly, Greg would know as well as anyone else that humanity as a whole is incapable of global peace because of closed minded individuals. humans have no true God except war. we are constantly in conflict with ourselves over faith and amongst each other over (your example here-you name it..there's a conflict over it). |

i can't say i've read up on the claudio v wilhelm story but i think this song (as any other) has so many meanings to it than just one. to me, it's a perfect description of faith in the afterlife (namely, heaven). seems like this life loses meaning if all this "consequence" builds up to a utopia where none of our understanding is needed anymore..why go through it if you don't take anything with you? i don't know...anyone could tear apart my interpretation easily but i think it has some validity. thoughts? |
