One of my favorite songs of all Belle & Sebastian, the quiet anger and the quiet profanity is just perfect. To me it's about someone who's in love with someone but makes petty observations to try and distance themselves from that person because they're not around anymore, in other words, he wants her but he's trying not to admit it...Wow I fucking love this song so much.

Regarding the grungey guitar bit, I think it's because even though he wants the drink to hlep her he knows it won't, so the guitar is showing his frustration at not being able too much of a difference. Perfect example of why I love the Manics, using guitars to escape the sadness.

I think this just might be my favorite Neil Young, so great. To me it's about having to leave one part of your life behind, and then you have to go down another road. I love this song.
