When Cameron stated that he loved this song when he was in Eton, Weller went bananas and said he was outraged that a conservative dared like one of his songs and that Cameron didn't realise that it was an anti-Eton song. Actually, I'm pretty sure that Cameron has perceived, somehow, that Weller is a leftist (no need to grow a beard à la Castro and appear with a red star beret), and doesn't think Eton Rifles is a celebration of Eton graduates. I'm pretty sure Cameron just doesn't give a fig about Weller's political opinions. In fact, when Eton students chanted "Eton Rifles" (as Cameron says they did), the laugh seemed to be on Weller, and that makes him a little mad. Poor Paul. |

Of course it's about Thatcher and the stronc stance taken by her government on international issues. For Weller, taking back a piece of territory invaded by a neo-fascist dictatorship was like Hitler invading Poland, no less. That the Argentinian government fell and was replaced by a democracy as a consequence of their defeat in the Falklands is completely immaterial. In the eyes of Weller, Thatcher is Lucifer anyway, and the fact that she was several times reelected only proves that his compatriots are very bad people. Weller is quite a democrat. Great song, lyrics artistically good but completely stupid as social comment. |

I think it refers to this event (http://www.reagansheritage.org/html/reagan_panel_spalding.shtml) - a speech by President Reagan before the House of Lords. Or any speech by the "king of the cowboys", but that one must have made them go bonkers. I love Madness, but politically, they have a mental age of about 12. |
