Conjure One – Tears From The Moon Lyrics 16 years ago
Yep, it's a breakup song.

"Tears from the moon" would have made an excellent metaphor for rain, but then she says "fall down like rain." It feels clumsy if you blatantly explain a metaphor like this, so I like to interpret it literally since the crying moon is an awesome mental image.

Conjure One – Sleep Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm not sure if sleep refers to sex in this song. I don't think the problems of nerves being shot, being tired and having no dreams are cured by sex. The tone of the song also suggests fatigue, rather than the yearning for sex.

Instead, I prefer the literal meaning: she needs someone who gives her, for some reason or another, comfort and stability. Instead of acting as a metaphor, the lyrics support the importance of being able to provide these things. It's a counter-argument against a common theme which I see a lot of: that good relationships start off with romance and excitement and become bad relationships when "the fire dies out" and only peace remains. Sure, stasis isn't a good thing, but don't underestimate the importance of the peace that someone else provides. You'll only miss it when it's gone.

Conjure One – Center of the Sun Lyrics 16 years ago
At first, you can interpret the girl's "hearing violins" as something negative. While the men of the market are surely "bad", is it any better if the girl retreats from reality (through closing her eyes). In fact, perhaps her distancing from the world is what they insult her for in the first place. The world may be evil, but it does you no good to run away from it and hear violins which aren't there.

Later, when the boy hears violins as well, it proves that the girl isn't crazy. Someone else thinks like her, and whatever the violins represent does exist in the world since he acknowledges it.

But it doesn't end there. When taken alone, their worldviews are incomplete in different ways. For the girl, it's summarized in "they say the most horrible things". While its true that horrible deeds are done, she thinks that all actions are horrible. For the boy, it's summarized in "they break the most beautiful things. The truth here is that there is beauty in the world, but he thinks that it's hopeless since they are always broken.

But they meet, their worldviews complement each other: "you say the most beautiful things". The girl learns that there is good in the world, apart from her. While the song doesn't say what the boy's reaction to this is, I'm sure that he learns that there's sill hope to fix what's broken.

Black Kids – Hurricane Jane Lyrics 16 years ago
The song has the same gender ambiguity as "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You". The singer is male, but refers to himself as a girl when talking about sex in the following two lines: "I put what I want, when I want, in my body." and "I want you here inside me. Say the word." What really drives home the ambiguity is: "Christ. He's everybody's girl."

For convenience, though, I'll refer to the male singer's character as male and Jane as female.

The guy here is confident, promiscuous and addicted to sex/company ("I put what I want, when I want, in my body"). Because of this, he's not used to being alone. I'm sure we've all been alone on a Friday night, but when this guy talks about it, he makes it sound like he's going through such an ordeal.

Jane's interesting because on the outside, she's violent ("You had a ready elbow for the girls you hate or just don't know. You head-butt me, cos you thought it was cute."). You'd think that this would make for a bitchy, aloof girl. But emotionally and/or socially, she's timid. When she says the lines "You can't spend the night..." and "Or alone. That would be better." she doesn't sound confident in herself at all. Sure, she can go to clubs, dance and make enemies without a second thought. But when it comes to making friends (or lovers), she hesitates.

Somehow, the guy catches a glimpse of the inner Jane and falls in love with her. This love is strong enough for him to make sacrifices that he hasn't made before. Jane, on the other hand, keeps pushing him away gently ("You tell me guard my heart, I might get hurt." and "We can't spend the night..."), but he endures.

I really love how the singer gives the benefit of the doubt. I don't see that in any other song.

ATB – Ecstasy Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think it's really simple as drug-like addiction. Drug addiction is a darker theme, which brings harm to the addict. But the song doesn't feel that way for me.

First, note that the girl is surprised at her current situation. And, from her point of view, her partner is just as clueless as her. It makes the relationship somewhat innocent because neither of them knew what they were getting into. Both of them didn't have any schemes, they just did what came naturally and their relationship grew from there.

The lyrics also lack the malice that comes from the demands of addiction. True, she can't get enough of her partner, but she describes the relationship as a "beautiful vision" and how it relates to her dreams and ambitions. The phrase "life-long" shows that the feeling of ecstasy goes beyond a few fleeting moments. She's not just happy for a short while like with a drug, this is a commitment.

Finally, the idea of addiction itself is contradicted with the line "There can be no other while we still have each other". The use of "while" shows that she isn't completely dependent. She'll stay with her partner while it lasts, but only as long as it's possible for them to be together.

I'm bothered how "There`ll be no more drifting back and forth in time" but later on he says "I`ll turn back time".

Any idea how to reconcile these two lines?

After reading it again, I noticed how badly I need to edit that last post. Not sleeping really gets to you.

Ben Folds – You Don't Know Me (feat. Regina Spektor) Lyrics 17 years ago
I have a happier meaning for the song which comes from the idea that the line "you don't know me" has a different consequences depending on who says it.

When the guy says it, he thinks it's the reason that the girl hasn't rejected him. He's afraid that if she gets to know the real person, she'd leave him.

But, notice when the girl says the line. She says it right after "But can you go back once you know?" and "Why the fuck would you want me back? Maybe it's because...". She says "you don't know me" as a response to his questions. Whatever he's hiding, she's the kind of person who will stick with him despite his flaws. She isn't the judgemental person that he's afraid she is.

A followup this is whether the girl is a good judge of character or not. Is the guy wrong for looking down on himself too much? The answer is yes. Throughout the song, being to complete his sentences shows that she knows exactly what he's thinking and feeling. You could say that the mirroring of his lines shows that she's as clueless as him, but it's too much of a coincidence for them to think of exactly the same cardboard standup metaphor (when both of them say "paint me anything").

It looks like there's hope for the insecure guy after all. While he's hidden his true self behind a cliche, the girl was perceptive enough to see through it and get to know him even if he was too blind to know her. But it won't continue this way. Close to the end of the song, some lines are spoken rather than sung. At this point, the guy's opening up and, to his surprise, she's willing to listen despite his hesitation (which would really annoy most people). Unfortunately, the song doesn't tell us how it went, but the cheerful humming as it ends suggests a happy ending.
