Honestly after reflection, I think fear of commitment hits far closer to the mark than one or the other members of this relationship cheating on the other. It sounds far more to me that the man couldn't return the fierceness of love that the woman has put forth (due to the fear of commitment), and finally he "froze" and, for lack of a better term, released her from the relationship to find someone who could do that for her. Only after she does, he realizes the horrendous mistake he's made, and this song is probably an acount of the last conversation the two will ever have. A breakdown of my reasoning is below. "Yesterday he said my eyes Were fading fast away" It's become obvious to him she no longer feels for him what she once did. "I said well what do you expect You asked me not to stay and if it had all been for the best I wouldn't feel this way" It becomes apparent they had a relationship, and he asked her to leave, but why? "Oh he said it's crazy How love stays with me You know it hurts me Cause I don't wanna fight this war It's amazing to see me reading through this scene Of love and fear and apologies" It is revealed that he harbors strong feelings for her, and every day he's reliving and dealing with his mistake in ending the relationship. "My love is like a blanket That gets a little bit too warm sometimes I wanna wrap somebody in it Who can hold me in his arms Cause when it got a little too hot in there He was always stepping out for air and he froze Oh he froze" It is revealed that she loved him with a fierceness that he could not reciprocate. A huge fear of commitment drives him away time and again and puts a wedge between them that they cannot overcome. This is the answer to the question we are made to ask in verse 1. "Yesterday he looked at me With a tear in his eye and said I'll always tell you you're my friend I hope i don't have to lie Cause it's clear you love another man I said you're damn right" He's discovered it's too late to mend their relationship. She's found someone else who can return her love with the strength and commitment she has, and she has moved on. He's clinging to the only thing he could possibly have left from the relationship: her friendship. "He said it's crazy How love stays with me You know it hurts me That i didn't figure it out before" He realizes only too late exactly what he's lost, and it's killing him. "And now it's too late for a soliloquy" Nothing he can say will change it. "It's way too late for dignity" He'd beg/plead/crawl/ whatever, if only it would work OR (more likely) He knows he cannot justify his past actions, he has only one recourse left: "It's time for apologies" |

"I am in no way stating that my explanation represents Bryan Adams' true feelings on the subject; but rather my own personal interpretation of the lyrics. " What about Don Henley's feelings on the subject? |
