I think it means that it's more difficult these days to do the right thing. As time goes on, we are governed more and more by unnatural forces, politics and corporations. But the laws of nature remain unchanged and to follow them requires going against the grain.

I think this songs says that we need to protect the earth from the improper use of progress. He is an educated man who drives a car and flies in planes. So I don't think he wants us to return to the dark ages. But he's asking for more awareness as to the consequences of our actions.
