| Joni Mitchell – See You Sometime Lyrics | 17 years ago |

The range of emotion she expresses in this song is just amazing. Anger, sorrow, lonelyness- but also strength and maybe even hope. Meaning-wise it's pretty obvious: adjusting to a new kind of relationship with an ex-lover. She's looking back at what they had, full of mixed emotions because she still has feelings for him, but the wounds from the break up are still fresh. Joni Mitchell's songs capture me because they manage to be so personal, and yet so universal. Just listening to her sing this song, you know she's writing about something that really has meaning to her, but she leaves things vague enough that you can fit your own experiences to the lyrics, and it becomes just as meaningful to you. |

| Modest Mouse – This Devil's Workday Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Every time I hear the line about the potted plant, it makes me think of the scene in Harold and Maude when they "rescue" the tree. As for meaning: I think the people he calls "logs" are those who allow themselves to be swept along by the tide of mindless belief. However, I don't know that the alternative is presented much more favorably. He may be his "own damn god," and be free to do whatever he wants (eat wedding cakes, drown puppies), but it doesn't matter all that much, because his actions are still, from a much broader perspective, meaningless and absurd. |

| Spirit – Animal Zoo Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The first time I heard this song I thought it was about ugly women- "Better get your ass to the Animal Zoo!" But now, looking at the lyrics, that interpretation breaks down. I guess it's really about disgust with modern society, and a desire to get back to simpler times. Kind of like the Kink's Apeman. | |
