Exceptional post, titanicsam - gotta wonder what it will take, and how long, before Americans say NO MORE. Yes, it's 11:59 - what happens at 12:01? |

His daughter? What daughter...the song was written in 1969. Actually, Mick's eldest daughter wasn't born until 1970 and was hardly a "graceless lady" even when the song was released in '71.
Glad to know that Susan Boyle led some folks back to The Stones version ; ) |

| The Rolling Stones – Monkey Man Lyrics

gabby, you got it. A "monkey" is a junkie...got a monkey on his back. The "That's not really true" line reminds me of the old joke:
Q. When does a junkie lie?
A. Every time his mouth moves. |

Does anyone know anything about the chant Perry Farrell sometimes sings as an intro to Jane Says? An example of what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNZ2A2URVSY |

Beautiful song of profound longing.
By the way, Dylan DID do a wonderful cover of the song - people often confuse the Donovan and Dylan versions. There are, indeed, two separate ones. |

| K's Choice – Not An Addict Lyrics

I'm Not An Addict is an exceptionally well-written song. The author truly captured the "credo" of every addict I've ever known.
I'm curious - oftentimes Jane's Addiction is credited with covering this song. Does anyone know if they ever really did, or are the voices of the lead vocalist of K's Choice & Perry Ferrell's just extremely similar? |

nolimit917 got the history of this awesome song down pat.
I will add that Jane Bainter is alive and living in West Hollywood, California. She's in her mid-40's now, and says she finally did kick her junk habit in 1993 - oh, and she did eventually visit Spain : )
Also, yes, the vids for Jane Says are exceptional (check youtube). |

| Al Stewart – Year Of The Cat Lyrics

For several decades, YOTC has been one of those songs that I stop whatever I'm doing to delve into. Absolutely lovely melody and lyrics.
By the way, in Chinese astrology there is, quite intentionally, no "Year of the Cat" (there's a story about why there is a Year of the Rat instead). So, the "Year of the Cat" is a year that is all in one's imagination...a fantasy year. |
