i think it simply means that he's saying since she "has a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend" that he had, he's implying the boyfriend is not that attractive and is girly, and thats why he has potential to be with her. because if she'll date the guy who looks like a girlfriend he had, then why wouldn't she date him? hence "i've got potential" |

i think "i can't be your friend unless i pretend" is from a boy who is friends with a girl but falls in love with her but she doesn't feel the same, so he's telling her that he can't be her friend because he wants more so he has to pretend that she's just a friend to him so it doesn't screw up their friendship |

i think one of the coolest things about this song is the way he explains her being complex and unique by saying "it's as simple as something that nobody knows" and "it's as common as something that nobody knows" which both are obviously not simple or common |
