Deep Purple – Maybe I'm a Leo Lyrics 16 years ago
As to the meaning of the lyrics I believe it is about a woman (I doubt I am breaking any ground here). The lyrics must be examined closely to get the full story.

It seems as if the narrator is coming back to wherever he lives and is greeted by a "big surprise". He says that he can only sees open skies which would imply that your world has been taken away which shows us how much this woman meant to him. The next line is odd because it blames a third party: "they've taken her away". This makes me think the fight they may have had got a little too heated and either the police or maybe her friends took her away from the narrator.

The next two verses make it clear that the narrator blames himself for her being gone and it is apparent how badly he wants her back. My previous theory about the police/ friends or family taking the woman away is further reinforced by him saying "maybe i'm a leo, but i'm not a lion". Seems like the narrator has been accused of being violent.

Sorry if that's a little wordy i'm a very disorganized writer.

Steely Dan – Two Against Nature Lyrics 17 years ago
This is also pure speculation, but i think the song is about two police officers who believe it is their personal duty to clean up crime and to "Pull up the weeds before they're too damn big". I think describing prostitution and drugs as "nature" is a particularly important clue to their mindset that things are naturally like this, but they still have to fix them.

The Erzulie verse really puzzled me so I did some research. Apparently Erzulie is a symbol in Vodou and is sometimes associated with homosexual relations. So I think that they're talking about a man who is in denial that he is gay and had a one night stand with a man, a fact which he discovers only the next morning with the "pantela" (cigars) and "derby hat" on his nightstand. Also in the next verse "They all massisi we hang tough". Massisi apparently can mean gay in Haitian, so its possible that these to cops are against this aspect of "nature" as well. Phew, this song has alot more to it than other Steely Dan songs.

Steely Dan – Janie Runaway Lyrics 17 years ago
Don't mean to offend Chublin, but I don't think that the "guy" had anything to do with Tampa. I think that Janie ranaway all by herself and given the rest of the nature of the song, he could be threatening her. She maybe entrusted him with the story of her dad's crime (possibly arsen? "put out the fires"). Again I don't mean to nit pick.
