Amanda Palmer – Strength Through Music Lyrics 16 years ago
AlvBot, I think, got it mostly right, though I doubt the first verse was a stab at wikipedia, in general or specific. More to do with the way the shooter isolates himself with the internet, and some of the warped perspectives that dominate a lot of the internet, including all the porn.

I don't think there is really a huge amount of judgment in this song; this has more to do with observing the human condition. The shooter feels cut off, and so he cuts himself off even more, until people don't seem like people anymore. It's classic anti-social behavior (in the clinical sense). After the fact, everybody wants to blame something--video games, gun culture, anything that seems plausible.

'no cry, no whimper, no sound at all"--it seems this way to him, because he's wearing headphones, listening to his music. He's so cut off, he's not even connected to his victims. His ipod or whatever just facilitates this. Headphones are a way for people to avoid contact, even when surrounded by peers. And it leads into the next song on the album, Guitar Hero.

Iron & Wine – Love Vigilantes (New Order cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
When I first heard this song, I just thought it was the sweetest little story. I thought he came home and his wife had received the letter in error.
Then I listened to it again and the realization that he could just as well be dead began creeping up on me, and that was depressing.
It's a beautiful song, though, and I like to think that it's open-ended on that.

The Airborne Toxic Event – Innocence (Live Intro) Lyrics 16 years ago
Well it's a pretty classic description of depression, first of all.
Mikel references his medical condition, which involves Vitiligo, i.e. patches of lost pigment in the skin: "These spots on my hands" and again, "The ink stains on my hands" (which I think is the secondary meaning, the first being, of course, how he works so hard to write, and in context, how he's not sure it has any real purpose).
At the end of this "intro", he's saying when he feels like this, that if he knew that it was true that the dead went home to heaven, then he would gladly, well, go. As in, suicide.

I have a hard time connecting this to Innocence, which as far as I can see is about loss of innocence, probably through loss of virginity, and how it pretty much ruins their romance. I know they play them together in some live sets, but I would hardly consider them part of the same song.

Elliott Smith – King's Crossing Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't know, the fact that "Because we love you" is so quiet that you probably won't even hear it the first few times through the song makes me think that it's... like... unconscious or something like that. Like he asks for a reason not to do it, doesn't hear a response because it's so weak and lost in the noise, so he's going to go for it.

I didn't hear the line at all, for years. I noticed it today but I thought it said "I can't", so I looked up the lyrics here and upon re-listening I realized these lyrics were right.

It's worth mentioning, regarding the intro, that iron and sulfur are the chemical components of pyrite, ie fool's gold.

Also, Amanda Palmer has music videos for the first seven tracks of this album on youtube (search "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" Video Series), making a more or less contiguous story, if you can follow it. The video for this song is pretty good.

Brand New – Gasoline Lyrics 16 years ago
Eh, 'sokay.
But "Gasoline" is way too common a song title. Try youtubing "Gasoline" and about a dozen different songs by different artists pop up with the same name.
I hope the album version (assuming it makes the album...) has a different name, if for no other reason than to keep it from being confused with The Airborne Toxic Event's version.

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 17 years ago
It reminds me of someone recalling a dream.
I guess in that case he's talking about the dream to Michael, who was in the dream and who may or may not have died (dreams are often pretty vague on that sort of thing, you know?).

I actually doubt that that's what the writer had in mind, but it's how it sounds to me.

Okkervil River – Calling and Not Calling My Ex Lyrics 17 years ago
"And you won't wait for me in some secluded stand of trees some Christmas Eve some god was kind enough to set aside"

I am almost certain that this is a (brilliant) reference to another brilliant song, performed by Iron & Wine and Calexico on their joint album "In the Reins".

http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530822107858559693

The song is "Sixteen Maybe Less" and the line that is most closely referenced is
"My brother told me he saw you there
In the woods one Christmas Eve, waiting."

The plots of these two songs make for a great comparison and contrast.

Okkervil River – This House Is Not a Home Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is actually quite a mystery. It's pretty much agreed that the singer is Will Sheff, lead singer of Okkervil River, and a simple google search credits the song to Okkervil River everywhere.
However, it's never appeared on any Okkervil River release. And in a Message Board used by the Okkervil River website, http://www.jound.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=189 the band's former bassist Zach said it was absolutely NOT an Okkervil river song.

So either it was Will Sheff singing with a different band (eg Shearwater) or a solo track he recorded on his own.
