| I agree with watchingdeerandbirds. Andrew Bird says the guy is dealing in commodities of the abstract sort ie saying that the money he's dealing with doesn't actually exist. It reminds me of how banks create money with loans. The lukewarm liquid diet lyric may also refer to liquidity of assets. | |

He holds the rope & sail, which makes me think he commanded a ship on a river in Venezuela and fought piranhas. There's no one around on Easter because they are all in church & is not attending (cool). & I'm not as sure about this one but "unrolling the cement" sounds like someone unrolling a red carpet so he is possibly walking around this ghost-town feeling like royalty. At the end his nerves are so hardened by everything he's been through he has no desire to fight anyone. I get a loner-captain bluesy vibe from this song. My favorite White Stripes song. & Jack's guitar is amazing! |

I heard this in the grocery store today. Back in the nineties my mom had this cd. The singer's attitude annoyed me "Are you what you are - or what?". Plus the fact that she was a total stoner. Just by listening to the song I could sense it. I'm almost positive it's "shove me in the shallow water" and that she's referring to baptism. The lyrics are really repetitive and only two subjects are mentioned: philosophy and religion. Either way, I still don't like this song. |

| "indifference is killing me" would be considered a fallacy if the narrator were referring to his own indifference. How could your own indifference cause pain? It is her indifference that hurts- or cracks him up I'm not sure. She drives blindly, with no concious for the unwanted memories she may cause... Is she also too blind to "find" what he knows she will eventually want- a diamond ring from him. I get the impression that her recklessness makes him angry and therefore he Is also indifferent- but to their relationship. He is trying to break her heart in order to wake her up. Weird interpretation- I know... But cold fo'sho. | |

| i heard this song on top 40 radio & it def caught my attention. this song sounds to me like a girl who goes to the clubs & does coke (she mentions letting it snow down in the stalls aka bathrooms before she's ready to deck the halls) & picks up men. actually it almost sounds like she is comparing her way of seduction to the addictive properties of a drug... like saying she's creeping up in your head/hitting the mainline etc. the song has that vibe to it imo. anyway, it's clear that she means to encircle & destroy... & her target is obvs the boys. | |
