| Andrew Bird – Heretics Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this yet: The first thing I though about when I heard the line "we'll sew a doll about it" was people making a voodoo doll. It makes sense to me, and that's always how I interpreted that line. Voodoo is considered heretical by a lot of people, so that ties in with the overall theme of the song. I don't think the song's all about voodoo, though. I see it as Andrew pointing out that hey, you guys think we're heretics, and you guys also think that voodoo practitioners are heretics. Maybe we should all band together against you. That's just me reading between the lines. (Perhaps too far? Oh, well. It's not a huge part of the song, but I was surprised that nobody else thought of it.) |

| John Ralston – It's Not Your Fault Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Wow, I'd never thought of it that way, but it definitely could be interpreted that way easily. Here's how I interpreted it: The first verse, "I don't ever want to wake up..." I thought of as the person shutting down. Not wanting to deal with the present, he tries to 'hibernate' through the tough times. I've felt like that before, so my judgment could be slightly biased. "You said that it wasn't that sharp And your accidental remarks..." This is a friend telling him that it's not really so bad, but actually making it worse by their word choice or tone or how they're telling him. The chorus, "I want you to know that it's not your fault...". He know that his friend feels bad about what's going on, and wants them to know that it's all (or mostly) on him, not his friend. This is his way of making ammends. "You said that it didn't look rough..." I thought of this as a metaphor. His friend's telling him that it's not so bad, it's not so rough, but he knows how easy it is to slip into bad habits and things he'll regret. At this point, it's 'sink or swim'. He has to make a choice. --You know what? I think I'm looking too far into this, or trying to make it more positive. It's a song about suicide. |
