I agree with a lot of the opinions of what the song actually means but to sum it all up, the song means different things to different people. In my opinion though I always thought the song was about her talking to a girlfriend or an old friend that asked her what was going on or new in her life. Or maybe even a therapist. She was telling them about how she was in a relationship with a guy and how everything was just an illusion, he was really a jerk and she was in love with him and "he showed her what it was to cry", really showed her what a broken heart was. The only difference I have from the other opinions is the part of the song where she says "you're a little late, I'm already torn", again I think it's a conversation with someone and they are telling her it's okay, don't give up on love, but she's already lost her faith in love, she's completely vulnerable and already torn. I think you really have to think of the definition of torn and what it means and how it relates to you in your life to understand the song. What it means to me and how I can totally relate to it is that your mind tells you to believe in love don't give up, it will find you when you least expect it and every other old saying there is out there, but your heart tells you give up because it's been hurt too badly and doesn't want to go through being broken ever again. It's really a great song, timeless, because someone will totally understand it at one point in their life when they are shown "what it is to cry." |

This is absoulutely my favorite song on the whole album. I love the play on words and I can totally relate, sadly...lol. It's about someone that had a one-night stand and wants to know why the other person hasn't called yet. They are trying to make excuses for why they haven't called to protect their ego hence the line "maybe there's something wrong with his phone," but they know why really "or maybe its morning and the thrill is gone." They are just saying that if it wasn't for the other night and the one night stand they could have been in love and in a relationship instead of a fling for one night. They are trying to forget the one night stand and once they do get that phone call from the guy just wanting a booty call, they realize that they like him and want more than that, so they have to let it and him go. |

I can actually relate to this song very much. It's actually about someone who still has love for an ex. They know that they have obviously moved on with their life, but they just want to know if they think of them sometime, because they still think of the ex. Obviously, because they know that the ex has a fiance and just had a baby. They don't want them back hence the line "tell your fiance he can relax," they just want to know if they think of them. |
