I love this song. I think it's pretty clear that this song is not about "never giving up;" rather, it's about realizing he should have given up so much sooner. It's called "This Is The Countdown" for a reason--he's counting down to the end of the relationship, as illustrated by when he says, "I still don't know why we were holding on." Tonight is his "one last try" to make things work, but he doesn't want to make it work anymore because he's been "sitting for too long" and he's done. They tried to work things out and stay together because it was comfortable and secure and they were afraid of going out into the world and trying new things. Their insecurities turned into the "weights that keep [them] stuck here in the comfort and the fear." But now he finally knows that it's the end--he can "see the signs" and "read between the lines"--and this is where he's going to "breakout." |
