Jack's Mannequin – Suicide Blonde Lyrics 15 years ago
to me this song is about growing up and entering an adult world with jobs at dmvs and news from cnn. the suicide blonde would be a california girl maybe dying her hair to appear more grown up

Jack's Mannequin – Annie, Use Your Telescope Lyrics 15 years ago
actually i'm almost positive this is about cancer

October is nearing the end of the year (life) which would represent him getting quite sick and nearing death

"When its late dont stop looking where my eyes turn to glass" is death

and he is basically saying no matter what he is always there in the stars

Regina Spektor – Reading Time with Pickle Lyrics 15 years ago
i think that the pickle is a representation of a guy she meets at the super market and they have a one night stand and maybe hang out the next day and she can see herself falling in love with the guy, and then he leaves. she returns to the supermarket hoping to find him again but no luck and in the end it was just meaningless ex like others have said, but she is still hopful of finding love.

Regina Spektor – Poor Little Rich Boy Lyrics 15 years ago
i think this song is about how youth often find problems in minor things and make things more dramatic than they are, such as teenage romance that is usually short lived. i find the "poor little rich boy" to be antagonizing like "oh poor you" in a sarcastic way. and the "your so god damn young" is a reminder to enjoy being young and you shouldnt be trying to make adult problems out of childish things

i just realized something

i have two recordings of this song one of them has improvising in it at the end and one of them does not

if you do not have the one with the improv then i apologize becasue the lasy few bits of my explanation above are not applicable but i think that you can still understand it

Regina Spektor – Open Lyrics 15 years ago
i can deffinitly see all of the ideas from the previous posts but the first time i heard this song i pictured this musician, i always see a cellist because of the wires round my fingers, who is brilliant but somewhat ahead of their time so they become a sort of a hermit or sequester themselves from society " i am down the road and up the hill"

all he/she wants is to be appreciated by the public "potentially lovely", but because the public doesnt get it they remain at a mediocre level "perpetually human" but the music he/she continues to write sets her free "suspended and open. ( im going to refer to the speaker as a her from now on because thats how i picture it and him/her is a waste of key strokes, you still get the point)

the second verse is a lot of the same things i have already mentioned

i feel like the washing out the stains might be about her cleaning up some act of vandalism caused by teenagers in the town because she is so misunderstood

im not entirely sure about what i think about the third verse. i feel like it is her again asking the people to open their hearts and give her a chance to share the music inside her and then they too might understand all the beauty and insperation she sees in the world like something as simple as a street lamp shinning through a snowy night

and in the end i think that the empty room ghasping for air section is her realizing that the world may never understand her and that because she has sequestered herslef for so long she has built up these walls that are now suffocating her and i believe this eventually kills her from either going crazy or just not being able to stay in the world that has scorned her any longer. but her death is not sad it sets her free to live with her music forever.

the last few lines are about her dying message to the world which is just to truely listen to all that is around you and give everything a fair chance and i think the scating is particularly lovely because it is a generic form of music that everyone can do (not all perfectly and it is difficult to perfect, dont think im calling it easy) and its just saying everyone can experience music the way she did

Regina Spektor – Oedipus Lyrics 15 years ago
so most of what i think about this song is already posted here but ill add one more thing.

most people have discussed the 32nd sons issue. but after listening to the song for about the 100th time something else occured to me. and this has already been mentioned briefly by someone else.

"I'm the king's thirty second son
Born to him in thirty second's time

and

"Thirty two's still a goddamn number
Thirty two still counts"

could be reffering to the actual number or the time. Liaus and Jocasta sent oedipus away almost immediatly after his birth where he was raised by labdacus and his wife until his return to thebes, making him a thirty second son, as in he was only their son for a very short period of time.

also "thirty two is still a god damn number, thirty two still counts" could be interpertated as "thirty too is still a goddamn number thirty too still counts" even though he was only their son for thirty seconds it should still count he deserves their attention

i dont know its just another way to look at it

gotta love regina and her loaded language!

Regina Spektor – Lady Lyrics 15 years ago
i deffinitly agree that the song is about Billie Holiday but also think there is something else to it.

the first two verses and chorus are mostly reference to her hard life, and her retelling the story to her audiences.

when she sings "i have walked these streets so long...i am free" is her realizing she is ready to move on although she has no regrets about her life hence she is free to do so.

"on this stage..." is her reflecting on her life before she dies and saying goodbye to not only the stage in a performing sense but also the stage of life.

and then "lady lights a cigarette, puffs away and winter comes and she forgets" is her deah where winter is common metaphor for death (ie Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening- Frost) and then she no longer has to remember her difficult life because she is in the afterlife or lack there of or whatever it is you would like to believe.

that is my take on the song anyway.
