just a thought that the song is about King Henry the VII, "now in the morning I sleep alone" refers to his many wives and how he was never satisfied with any of them,"the old king is dead, long live the king" could refer to his breaking away from the pope and the catholic church, when he did so he declared himself Supreme Ruler and Head of the newly formed Anglican/Episcopla Church, "the wild wicked wind," could be the reformation movement going on at the time which gave him the chance to go against the pope and the catholic church, "people couldn't believe what i'd become" could reference the idea he would actually go against the pope and the church,the "St Peter not letting him in"reference could be that Henry advocated Catholic practices until his death, He left the church but never really stopped enfocing it's doctrine and that St Peter wouldn't let him in even though he never really left the faith, because his leaving was more political than spiritual

just throwing this out there, but this song has an uncanny reseblance to the life of Henry the VII, his entire reign was encompassed by a fight with the catholic church and the pope, to the point where he broke the anglican church off from the catholics and declared himself the supreme head of the anglican church, maybe why Saint Peter woun't be calling his name, he broke off from the church but always considered himself to be catholic and propsed catholic doctrine

this song is a meatphore for Asbury Park during the 70's the Palace Amusement Building once stood at the end of what then called the circut, where people would cruise up and down the eight block loop trying to show off their cars, (the girls comed their hair in rearview mirrors and the boys tried to look so hard) there waas a mini amusement park on the boardwalk(the amusement park rises bold and stark the kids are huddled on the beach in the mist), by now sprinsteen had longed to get back to his roots in Asbury playing the club scene like the Stone Pony or any of the other seashore bars that dotted the streets of Asbury, and there were many of them at the time. he wanted to get back to where it all began and as he has said many times before be "just an ordinary guy"
