Not sure what the song is "about" I guess it could be about anyone giving it their all in the face of adversity. As for the movie, it's fantastic. From a firefighters point of view I don't know that it's about heroism. Heroism is something that just "happens". It's not planned and really it's just training taking over, and you don't even realize you've done anything all that special until it hits the print and they start passing out the awards. To me the movie is more about brotherhood. I know it's a worn out term, but I don't know how else to describe it. In a lot of ways I'm closer to the ones in my firehouse than I am with the ones at home. I know it sounds backwards and I don't know how it happens to be that way, I just know that it is. That's what this movie is about. The "firehouse" family. Remember in the movie when the firefighter (can't remember his name) got burned by the steam line? He didn't want his kids to see him like he was, because his kids saw him in a different way than Jack. He didn't mind Jack seeing him like this because well Jack knows him better than his own kids, knows his flaws, his strengths and weaknesses. Anyway on behalf of the firefighters out there thanks to all of you who posted the kind thoughts about our occupation. Seriously I know when you see a firefighter and say "thank you" sometimes we see a bit obtuse. We don't mean to, we're just embarrassed by the gratitude. To us we're just doing a job, like a mechanic, or a fry cook. No different, no better. |

This song is obviously about his life on the road, the mistakes he's made (cheating on his wife), and trying to keep it all together. I'm just guessing here but I imagine at some point his wife caught him cheating, and either left of was thinking of leaving, and he's on the phone with her everyday trying to work it out. At the same time he's on tour (that;s the mistress that calls him to stand in the SPOT LIGHT again. Spotlight obviously, stage lighting)and can't just "leave his job" to go make this right. |
