Bon Iver – Blood Bank Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that's a fantastic interpretation of the track. Well done. Enjoyyourroots...WTF is that all about.

I'd just like to add one thing. I think these two people already knew each other before meeting at the Blood Bank but saw each other in a new light, there, for one reason or another and that was like meeting for the first time:

"You said look it, that's your
Stacked on top with your brothers"

How could she otherwise know who his brothers is, although then again, maybe its just that the bags are stacked in order of name and John Doe Vernon is stacked with Justins.

But I like the idea that these two people started out knowing each other in a purely platonic way and gradually the relationship developed into love.

Love that line, "I'm in love with your honour, I'm in love with your cheek"

Anyway, great work Natbrack.

I think lyriclover81 did a great job but I have an idea about this part:
"I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time,
It's hard to find it when you knew it,
When your money's gone,
And you're drunk as hell".

The 1st line:
I think its about investing far too much in relationships that may never work out.

2nd line:
He knows what love can be like and wants it back but its tough to wade through all the crap at the start to get there.

The last 2 lines:
He's bet/invested too much as it is which has left him drained and as well as that he judgment is totally impaired as a result of previous misgivings (relationships).

I think thats it anyway...

I think that is an exceptionally comprehensive interpretation Spockguy. I agree with absolutely everything there. At the risk of repeating what you've said there I think that overall, the song is about getting into a relationship with somebody and slowly coming to the realization that its doomed to failure. That being so, the knowledge of the damnation of the relationship and the ability to do the right thing are not one and the same. I think there could be an idea that he wants the girl to end the relationship so he can feel some bit exonerated. Not because of anything this girl has done but simple because he's not ready to move on with all the baggage he has.

I love that bit about “Pour a little salt we were never here”. Straight away I thought of a beautiful ice sculpture that will inevitably melt and become a puddle but here he wants the process to be expedited. However, I question the motives; is that he wants to move on and forget that the relationship ever happened and have it completely erased from memory or that he simply wants it to come to a head and end the whole situation?

“I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
In the morning I'll be with you
But it will be a different "kind"
I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines”
It seems to me that there is a serious amount of anger here, I’m not sure if this is because he warned her and she didn’t totally heed or that he thought that if she followed through on what he said everything would work out (eventually).

As for the “Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere” bit. I think the subtle nuances of the vocals account for a lot here. Its sounds to me more like he’s pleading with her or indeed himself to try a little harder but ultimately it has become a purely sexual relationship. I know that’s a little abstract.

It seems to me that there is a huge amount of guilt associated with the fact that this girl has been lulled into a false sense of loving security only to be shunned… ”Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?”

Ultimately I think that everyone will take different meaning for each line and its their prerogative to decide on what that meaning is.
