Let me add something that I missed before. That is the other use of bowing. Bowing is a form of submitting to someone else. This seems like a more likely explanation that the one i previously proposed because it fits into rest song. The rest however about him only doing it because its easier than the alternative I still firmly believe. |

Hydraulic Heart, nobody is gonna put this kind of hard work and metaphorical genius into a song that is solely about a robot. Thats just bull shit. This song is about how someone either made him (the speaker) or convinced him (my money's on the later) to change. However once he had changed he realized that it wasnt really him. While this new person looks like him, on the inside he is empty since he is a superficial creation of others. He uses the robot analogy to represent how empty he ifeels. Since a robot can perform tasks but has no drive or emotions that makes a human. "It's easier to bow than keep these knees locked tight" I think here he is kinda fessing up to some of his wrongs. Admitting to what he has done solely because it'd take more effort not to. When someone bows they're are taking credit for a piece of work but at the same time he's expressing a kind of pride in his wrongs by bowing rather than just stepping forward. At the same time he realizes he needs to remain this robot b/c the alternative is committing these wrongs again. "My insides grind their gears. Abrasive churning, I'm so conductive. It's always been a task with such low impedance. My tendons tend to rust with time while wires misplace their currents So I will flee the factory, and pray you to dismantle me." Now i think he's referring to the new him falling apart here. Mainly b/c he's reverting to his robot metaphor, I think the robot is starting give way to the old him, but here's a kind off contradiction b/c at the beginning he's complaining about being turned into a robot but here he's begging for someone to fix this "robot". This makes me believe that he really wanted to change into this robot (or at least remain it) even though it wasnt him b/c the robot is a better person then he could ever be. As the robot he complains about who he is but without ever really wanting to go back to being himself. This leads to a kind of self hatred and resentment to the people who changed him that i think is felt when you listen to this song These are my personal thought on the song. I'm quite new to TREOS so i might still have to develop and understanding for them. All i can guarantee here is that this is in no way simply a song about life robot as explained by some of the other people here. Being a robot is part of it (although it is not a literal robot but rather a metaphor for a corporate zombie) but to say that is all there is to the song is to unjustly simplify a lyrical masterpiece. |

Honestly i think the speaker is expressing his desire to be with this girl but at the same time warning that she'll regret being with him. So wear me like a locket around your throat. Here hes saying that she'll show him off or tell everyone about him I'll weigh you down; I'll watch you choke. Now he's saying that in showing him off he bring her down and hurt her. The way this metaphor written it sounds like he doesn't want to hurt her You look so good in blue. You look so good in blue. This line, I think, is mainly for ironic comedy but also shows that while he's not going out of his way to hurt her he really doesnt mind that he is. Everything else is either very straight forward or I'm not sure about the meaning. |

honestly i think that like many of FOB's songs there r many meanings to this song 1st off i basiclly agree w/ skeetio on everything here but felt his explainations could use some xtra notation now th 1st thought he conveys is a common theme of this album basically a very elaborate xplanation as to y they sold out. i find this ironic b/c alot of th pplr h8ing on these songs b/c they sold out but no listening 2 th lyrics he compares himself 2 a salesman which he also does alot (in this aint a scene he calls himself an armsdealer) and is probably conceit (xtended metaphor) 4 this album. now a salesman is out to make money. nobody blames a salesman for being crooked cuz thats how he makes $ and life revovles around $ no matter how much we wish it didnt. he is asking mayb even begging for the same form of judgement as a salesman b/c he is a salesman for sounds. just like skettio says there may also b a girl involved but i almost wanna say he is once again refering to his fans. however i hav nothing to support this so im just going w/ wat skiettio said |

i hav to disagree w/ shotgunXXXwedding i think that said girl hasnt found th perfect guy i think this about a girl who has gotten so desperate that she just went for some guy that even though he acts like a gd guy be in reality is nothing like jesus or in other words a not so gd guy meanwhile hes trying to help her but hes reminding her it'll take time th devil's water is obviously like th forbidden fruit and he's telling her that its not all that great so relax and just dip ur feet th devils water can be many things but my moneys on sex. this may be directed towards a younger person (perhaps a daughter like figure to th speaker) |

| honestly i hav to disagree w/ Amoore12. i think that when he says the "Apathy and Urgency" line he means that he's not feeling any apathy even though he should | |
| Fall Out Boy – This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| All right so I'm so tired of ppl bashing on this song that ima put my own input here. 1st of all there's nothing wrong w/ a band trying to increase their fan base as long as they stay true to themselves. FOB did a very good job of doin this by making songs that either was true to their style or had a message they wanted to pass on. This song is doing several things at once: 1st and foremost it conforms to wat they think ppl will like so they can spread it around as far as they can. 2 it burns the ppl who like th song makin it a prank of sorts b/c th ppl who will like this song the most r the ppl who r being insulted by th song (and thnx to Pete's incredibly indirect lyrics and the overall inability to understand wat th hell Patrick is sayin most ppl wont even realize th message). Now between the attempts to make this song as main-stream as possible and his burning the ppl listening to the song its a testament to Pete's song writing abilities that he was able to put in another message into the song. This last one is a justification of mainly this song but the others that r directed towards the mainstream starting that "this is not a scene" but rather an arms race meaning that its just a contest between musicians due to the extended metaphor comparing his music and lyrics to weapons | |
