| to me it's clearly about another songwriter. named billy. given mercer clearly wishes this billy would shut up, and given the song is full of references to hair and millionaires, is there any doubt that it's billy corgan? who hasn't wished for billy corgan to just stop, already. | |

alright, here's what i got: firstly, it's clearly "Porto-centric Lisboans". secondly: "Harbisots" isn't actually a word, even if it does sound like he's singing that. my guess is: "and harbor-sorts who hang around in ports a lot, all night." |

Without wanting to attest that I definitely know what this song is about, keep this in mind next time you listen to it: Emiliana's boyfriend died when she was 23. Other songs on Fisherman's Woman seem to be about this: "Snow" pretty directly, the title-track appears to be about imagining her lost love is a fisherman away at sea, rather than gone for good. Likewise, I've always imagined this song as a letter to her dead love; a message-in-a-bottle thrown out to the world, knowing it'll never be returned. It easily could not be, but there's something eerie about that line "now heaven's closed its gates." |
