i can see where everyone gets drugs from this, as that does fit. but i also think it's open enough that it could be about leaving any comfort zone. like a hometown, for example, was my first thought. if you try to keep up with everyone that you used to know/be friends with/hang out with around your home, the same thing you've known your whole life, can you move on? but also, i can definitely see drugs as being a probable interpretation, that was just my first impression. incredible song. i agree, i love this song just a little bit too much. |

This song cannot be about Freddy Mercury dealing with AIDS... this song was released in 1975 and he wasn't diagnosed until at least 1987. I can't say much for what it IS about- perhaps a murderer, perhaps something deeper/more metaphorical than that, but i can at least say it isn't about AIDS, as much as that would seemingly make sense with the lyrics. |

this song makes me think of growing up. the whole time you're growing up you think you know, you think you've got yourself figured out, you spend all your time "getting by trying to figure out your lives" and all that time you're under the pressure of looking cool or making things significant, trying to be deep, trying to make everything meaningful, but when it comes right down to it- it's just for show, it's just for self, but there's no way you could've known that at the time. the lyrics make me think of a young couple, thinking they were perfect for each other, and now he's wondering, now that they're getting older, and fading out, if there's any merit left in that at all- "i thought you were the sweetest kill, did we even know?" i thought i knew you were the best, but did i really know anything at all? i dunno, that's just what it makes me think of. |

"the nervous cayuse cat awailin" pretty sure this should be "the nervous coyote caterwauling" he just says "coyote" like "ki-ote" either way, this song is gorgeous. i am in love with this band. |

i can't believe nobody's commented on this song. i feel dumb because i'm not cool enough to know what this song means. i'm biased since i already know mike doughty was on drugs. so of course i'm going to think that's what it's about and how hard it is to wake up and realize that so much time out of your life has been spent away because of it. ? |
