This is just an opinion, and I think that most theories on this page are perfectly valid, however, I think that such a deep song could have different meanings; one for each different person. For me, this song is just a description of love itself. "You'll find it hiding in the shadows" and "You'll find it hiding in the cupboards" just mean that love is something tremendously subtle. You can fall in love without really noticing; it can remain in the shadows. However, when you are in love and you have finally realized, you feel invincible, you feel perfect and happy, and that's why it "walks you home every night" and "helps you remember" because when you are in love with someone, you can't help but to continously remember the time you spent with that person. "If that's the way it is, then that's the way it is" Is a statement about love being something you can't choose, it simply comes and when it comes you have to accept it. "I still feel you and the taste of cigarettes What could I ever run to" is also about remembering that person (I still feel you) and thinking that s/he is the only person you could ever run to if you don't feel safe. "Just tell me it's tearing you apart Just tell me you cannot sleep" s/he hopes that the person she loves loves him/her to, because when you are in love but you haven't still told your loved one that you love him/her, you feel torn apart, eager and you can't sleep. So s/he hopes that the other person is feeling just like him/her. "And you didn't even notice When the sky turned blue" means that the other person is actually also in love with him/her, but the other person doesn/t know when s/he fell in love . "And you couldn't tell the difference Between me and you" Them making love maybe? or perhaps something more spiritual as in them both being one sigle entity bound by love. "And I nearly didn't notice The gentlest feeling" Again he is saying that love is something subtle, and taht he nearly dind't realice that he was feeling something for the other person. "You are the bluest light" is a reference to the previous sentence "You didn't even notice when the sky turned blue" which compares the beautiful blue of the sky to the light of love, hence the person s/he loves is the bluest light for him. |
