Richard Hawley – Tonight the Street Are Ours Lyrics 10 years ago
Wow, all of these comments and thoughts, but sadly posted under the wrong song… You will notice from the lyrics that this is the thread for Richard Hawley's melancholy ballad "Tonight" from the album, Coles Corner -- not to be mistaken for the drastically more uptempo song "Tonight the Streets are Ours."

I'm fairly new to this website so I'm not sure if the admin's correct these kind of mistakes if contacted (in this case, all 6 comments thus far are in the wrong song thread).

The The – This Is the Day Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes vordabois, you are certainly correct about the extended "fade-in" (not pause) at the beginning of this spectacular song. As to the meaning of this -- going along with what most have been saying thus far -- I believe this symbolizes the slow, gradual realization, or epiphany, that this man is coming to.

And to provide a little clarity as to who The The is exactly -- it is entirely the genius of one man, Matt Johnson. While some might note that synth player Keith Laws was there when The The was officially formed, every song was written solely by Johnson, and by 1982 it was essentially his solo project. Another interesting piece of trivia is that for the famed album "Mind Bomb," guitarist Johnny Marr of The Smiths teamed up with Johnson and even co-wrote one of the songs on the album.

For those of you who might be interested in exploring and absorbing more material from The The, I highly recommend the albums "Mind Bomb" and "Dusk." For those only interested in the album with the song "this is the day" on it, that would be "Soul Mining." Peace all!

Whitey – Wrap It Up Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree that the song is about revenge, but I think more specifically it's about getting revenge on the man, or those who try to keep you down; however, he's not advocating violent revenge, but rather to channel your anger into a positive energy that you can use to get even with those that have been taking advantage of you.
