Elbow – The Stops Lyrics 15 years ago
Another beautiful song I agree.
Ever since TSSK had references to http://www.turnmeup.org/ on it I've been doing that whenever I come across one of these 'secret' bits - and this one is just delightful! I must have listened to the album a dozen times and, of course, I knew the little drum riff was there and I did actually think it was quite good.
Then this week I went on a long car journey and popped the CD in for another listen. This time I really did turn the volume right up to the max as soon as 'The Stops' finished - and finally appreciated the dry wit of the banter.

Elbow – Presuming Ed (Rest Easy) Lyrics 15 years ago
What about the song title?
Presuming Ed is a character in the film 'Withnail & I' but is that relevant?

Elbow – Weather To Fly Lyrics 15 years ago
Interesting to compare this song with the first track on Asleep in the Back, Any Day Now, which also talks about making the break away from a home town. The earlier song seems to have a more desperate, urgent feel, whilst Weather to Fly is a more beautiful, reflective, nostalgic look back to how things were in the early days.

Elbow – Scattered Black And Whites Lyrics 15 years ago
This was the first song that got me into Elbow's music. My son, Nick, had made himself a compilation CD with tracks from loads of indie bands and I used to keep it and play it in my car. Scattered Black and Whites very quickly became my favourite track in the compilation, but although the song is clearly about reminiscences, I had somehow got it stuck in my head that the title referred to the black and white notes on a piano keyboard. Now I realise that it's actually about looking at old photographs but I still love the repetitive piano riff that drives the song and for me they will also be the scattered black and whites that led me to discover my current favourite band.
And now, to top it all, not only have I discovered a fascinating site where a band of fellow enthusiasts can add another layer of depth to all the gorgeous lyrics, but now I find that the previous contributor is none other than the man himself.
Thanks for the insights into the songs, Guy. Switching Off is another all time favourite and it means even more now.
