Lynyrd Skynyrd – Tuesday's Gone Lyrics 17 years ago
While of course this song has to do with losing a love on one level, I would suggest that another valid interpretation of the song involves the death of the Old South. You can't help but notice the phrase "Gone with the Wind" (famous novel by Margaret Mitchell set in the Old South during the Civil War, and of course made into a classic motion picture). Very appropriate for a Lynyrd Skynyrd song I would say.

But don't take my word for it -- read some William Faulkner :) (especially The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying).

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Parallel Universe Lyrics 17 years ago
While I don't deny that this song could be interpreted in terms of drug/heroin addictions, this song goes so much further than just being about drug addiction. This song contains a lot of Platonist ideas that have formed the basis of Western thought, religion, and modern science.

For instance, how do we perceive the universe and what constitutes reality? To Plato there were separate realms of being and becoming, with the physical universe being necessarily imperfect since it susceptible to the flaws of change and human perception. Hence, "It’s getting harder and harder
To tell what came first" -- one's understanding is limited by his/her imperfect perspective.

Also there's the concept of microcosm/macrocosm, another important concept in Western philosophy. I.e: "Oh my my a solar system that fits
In your eye microcosm" -- the brain is a solar system of its own.

Plus, being "made in the sea" is the idea of everything being descended down from one "chain of being", an idea from Plato and Aristotle. Hence everything is connected and Anthony Kiedis talks about being a sidewinder or a spider.

And the song also hints at the infinity of the universe and the human mind, as someone else mentioned. "fields of space" in your head, plus "I swear it's everywhere / It's everything"

But yeah, I'm not saying drug addiction isn't another way to interpret the song and this probably isn't what RHCP was thinking, but that's what it speaks to me. In short, RHCP rocks.
