I think that by mentioning "motherly breast" or "mother's lap" people automatically will think of a mother-baby relationship. But I think that's just a metaphor, I think the song is about someone dealing with a drug addiction. The first paragraph simply exposes that the person is too numb to feel even pain, yet wouldn't be able to find comfort like he did when he was a baby, or the way most children find comfort during their early years. "All the sense your are capable of does not seem to save you" may refer to the person being aware that his drug addiction problem is affecting him, yet he has no will to stop it. "You heed the glance of a smile" may refer to his own smile, and the medium to get to it is the drug, but then he questions himself "Was it impossible to float for a while?" as in "did I really need to get to this point? did I really need to do this?" Then he turns to religion as a way to redeem himself, and he wants to spend the rest of it "awake" or "clean", he get's the feeling they'll brake it, stop his addiction, but he knows it's a struggle. Idk, maybe my interpretation of the lyric is too literal, there might be more to it. But also the title "Amity" could be directed to the subject's relationship to both his drug and religion. |
