Kings of Leon – Rock City Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't know about the meaning, but, since no one seems to know this, I wanted to point it out. "Rock City" is Chattanooga, TN.

KoL grew up near Nashville, where I live. Everyone knows that Chattanooga is Rock City. "See Rock City" use to be painted on the roofs of barns down highway 41 all the way to Chattanooga.

I agree with you guys, really, but just to throw out another possibility:

So many fish there in the sea
I wanted you, you wanted me
(guy meets girl; girl meets guy; yadda yadd)

That's just a phase, it's got to pass
I was a train moving too fast
(the guy did not anticipate anything serious, wham bam, thank you ma’am)

Didn't understand what to see
Yeah, then I got a different view
It's you...no.
(he moved on, then the girl came back to his life… “I’m pregnant,” she says)

Wait, I'm gonna give it a break.
I'm not you friend,
I never was.
I said wait, I'm gonna give it a break.
I'm not your friend,
I never was.
(he tries to be honorable, they get married, and it lasts a few years. It fails of course, he is getting away from that crazy girl)

So many fish there in the sea
She wanted him, he wanted me
That's just a phase, it's got to pass
I was a train moving too fast
(she wanted to keep the kid (a boy); the kid wanted to go with him. He reluctantly took the kid, expecting him to want his mommy after a short while. He loved his son, but did not know how to be a single father. He still parties and likes the ladies. )

Yeah, I know you warned me
But this is too important
(After some time with his son, he settles. His devotion falls on his son. When he left, his wife had warned him that when the son wanted her back, it would tear him apart. He did not think so, then.)

Now I got a different view
It's you...
(Now he realizes he wants to keep the son with him. When he says, “It’s you.” The you he is referring to is his son. His son is the only thing in his view. The ex-wife gets custody of the son. She is taking him.)

Why can't you wait? (Please don’t take the boy.)
I'm gonna give it a break (here we can split custody more evenly)
I'm not you friend,
I never was
I said wait, I'm gonna give it a break
I'm not you friend,
I never was.

(just another point of view)

Dave Matthews Band – Recently Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe this song was inspired (maybe unconsciously) by On the Street Where You Live in My Fair Lady. Lyrics:

Freddy When she mentioned how her aunt bit off the spoon,
She completely done me in.
And my heart went on a journey to the moon,
When she told about her father and the gin.
And I never saw a more enchanting farce
Than that moment when she shouted
"move your bloomin' "....
I have often walked down this street before;
But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before.
All at once am I Several stories high.
Knowing I'm on the street where you live.
Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour Out of ev'ry door?
No, it's just on the street where you live!
And oh! The towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near.
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear!
People stop and stare. They don't bother me.
For there's no where else on earth that I would rather be.
Let the time go by, I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.

I was listening to the Harry Connick Jr. version of the song above immediately after listening to Dave, when the similarities came to me.
