Metric – Collect Call Lyrics 16 years ago
"I know it's a lie I want it to be true
The rest of the ride is riding on you"

"The rest of the ride is riding on you" what I get from it is a "question": Do YOU want to be true? Because if not, they will only keep that "place" for wishing...

Handsome Furs – Handsome Furs Hate This City Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with schimmi.
especially, when it comes to the end of the song:
"...so black out a million screams
and wire ourselves to the floor

baby we can get you anything you want
anytime you want
but you'll wonder what its for"

Basically, it could represent every industrialized fucking city of the world, not just particular one =)

"oh, there was home (x2)
oh, life is long and hollow (x4)

we hate this city and its drone (x4)"

There was home, when you're young, when you had nothing to worry about. And now, welcome to routine. Busy buzzy piece of...life.

Metric – Hustle Rose Lyrics 16 years ago
"Why wouldn’t I stand in line tonight? "
the key-sentence of the song .
There's always a reason behind everything you do. Contious, or subcontious motives(..or just a wacky morals :) ). Anyway, this song is such a bittersweet, because it justifies something considered "immoral". Another great song from Metric.
Musically - perfectly structured!

Fight Like Apes – Tie Me Up With Jackets Lyrics 16 years ago
"Lovely noise that makes you love me." ? I thought it was "Lovely noise - it means she loves me" and "Chimps don't like bats!" - "Chicks don't like THAT"
ok, fuuucking great..the whole meaning of this song is officially ruined to me ;(

A sailor married to the sea"

<3 METRIC = LOVE

Metric – Collect Call Lyrics 17 years ago
"I'm a lazy dancer
When you move I move with you"
Encouragement. Is like the singer encourages everyone to potentially be happy :)))
"If somebody's got soul
YOU gotta make the move"

And the name of the song : Collect Call - telephone call in which the calling party wants to place a call at the called party's expense.
The whole song is asking (almost begging, actually) to be loved :)) the sweetest thing for my ears.

HOPE not tho! I didn't mean mine...

Amanda Palmer – The Point of It All Lyrics 17 years ago
[June makes these excellent sewing machines out of common industrial waste]
I think this might be the key line for the "needle". There're "sweing machines" everywhere, but she's got the "needle". You're not "them".
[she wears shades, she wears shades]
Escaping the so-called reality, society. Protecting yourself from "the dirt" around you.
[You're almost human]
But in the end - who's the 'trapped animal' more? You're dead already, you're nothing at all. Nihilistic much? :/
[Maybe a week in the tropics would help to remind you how nice life can be
We propped you right up in a chair on a deck with a beautiful view of the sea
But a couple weeks later we came back and you and the chair were nowhere to be seen]
Why pretend that things are beautiful, even just for a while? You're still gonna be back to the routine. And what for? To afford another 'beautiful view' just for a while...

It's not even sad, it's true. The most realistic perception, I'd say.

Metric – Twilight Lyrics 17 years ago
I just listened to the Sound Academy's live version. It blew me away. I'm still under this weird, fuzzy amazement. Pure ecstasy.

"Go higher than high,
Go lower than deep"
hehe, genius

Not that kind of a song, that I'd want to take by pieces and "unmetaphor" =} But it's a whole emotional spectrum and empathy that comes from it. It's just beautiful.

Chad Vangaalen – City of Electric Light Lyrics 17 years ago
Imaginary song :) Reminds me of my city and a few people in the past. Can't stop wishing things would turn out different.
Anyway, another beautiful song anyone could relate to (I guess).

Metric – Love Is a Place Lyrics 17 years ago
The song sounds very imaginary. And there's definitely something behind these lyrics (as in every other song from Metric), but only during this one, I don't like going too deep into "what it means", more like "how it feels". It's like the only Metric's song that touches purely on Love. No matter where you are, if you feel the love (not necessarily being in love)...well,I might know how it feels. I wasn't in love, etc. it's the certain place, that did things to me :) the streets, the air,the people I didn't even know, or talked to.. This song reminds me of that feeling, as if it needed a reminder, but it does and it feels, like that weird kind of Love.

Metric – Poster of a Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
"Poster of a girl" can also be referred to the real person, who is emotionless. He/she screws you over just to see,if THEY can feel anything.
"Avoid beginners" those similar to the 'poster-person'. "'Cause I know how it feels" because she's been through this before.

Metric – Handshakes Lyrics 17 years ago
This song perfectly shows the career-ish way of life (kinda crosses path with "Patriarch On A Vespa",imo). I hear so much irony in this song and it feels so good =D
They nailed it very well.

Metric – Dead Disco Lyrics 17 years ago
"No one’s got a face left to blame"
Priceless!

This song is amazing! Not to mention those extended live performances(!)
All these brand new rock bands...some of them actually believe they've invented the new 'ways', when they ALL are only taking steps on 'long ago-walked' paths, including Metric, the difference is - they actually admitting it!
I'll always respect underground, indie music. Mostly the idea itself.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Nothing and Nowhere Lyrics 17 years ago
["How you gonna hide 'til you disappear?
Because nothing and nowhere is golden."]
Expectations fail, that's how I hear it. And then you "hide" (or literally), so no one, but mostly yourself can see your own fall. Sounds like avoiding disappointment. But I think this question ("How you gonna hide 'til you disappear?") has a bit of irony in it..Because you can't avoid such things, it's a part of life, if you hide - you're already gone.
["Numb is the new high, old memories die out 'till
Nothing and nowhere is golden."]
"old memories" seem like the only thing, that's left "golden".
["it isn't insane on paper to have to ask "]
At first, I thought it has some historical meaning, like everything is repeating. History itself repeats and it's not insane, this's how it goes.
OR permanent are only things you write! On paper, what you read and 'put it in your head' is permanent ("golden") ' till you forget it.. but still it's written on "permanent" paper! Yeah!
I swear I couldn't explain it twice now ..but this how I hear this song now. It's "golden" to me :)
It'd be interesting to read more thoughts on this line =]

Black Kids – I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You Lyrics 17 years ago
I see(hear) the song, like this: the person who sing knows everything about that girl, knows the way she likes to be treated, etc. (but she's stupid and doesn't see it at all) and now he/she's asked to teach someone who she's with (currently) how to do it (ridiculous situation!). And it sucks, because he/she loves that girl, but he/she is probably just a "best friend" to her.

This song is sad, if not for the melody and the way he sings it, I'd cry listening to it, seriously.

The Kills – I Call It Art (La Chanson de Slogan) (Serge Gainsbourg cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I have just realized on how many levels I misheard this song. Geez, it's not as gross, as I heard it! I love it now, damn. I need to hear the original. Love VV's voice though..

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Crowd Surf off a Cliff Lyrics 17 years ago
"If I'm sorry you lost me you'd better make it quick
Cause this call costs a fortune and it's late where you live"
OMG, this is genius, Emily is amazing! It damn hurts, when someone you loved is trying to explain, what you have done, especially when it's all done and over. "costs a fortune" of pains.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Pretty Head Lyrics 17 years ago
This is my favourite song of the album. We all probably meet such people "like that girl" in our lives, broken ppl for life. I just don't know how to handle them, so yeah "I don't want to see that girl". Not really an explanation, as if it needs one =) But this song is brilliant, if you relate to situation.

Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Bore Lyrics 17 years ago
I think what she means, is that nothing really can surprise us anymore and if you don't want to be so easily forgotten, well, you gotta work hard to make it happen.

Tegan and Sara – Floorplan Lyrics 17 years ago
I love it! Some Sara's songs are like jigsaw puzzles, lol. I thought it was song about person, who simply gives a 'map' and 'directions' so the other person (potential sympathy) won't get 'lost'. Being an open book!
But the rest of the lyrics just won't go with this theory :D
"All eyes are on me now" - to me it's "go ahead blame me!"
"What was I looking for?" - I'd like to find out that too!
"I shouldn't go when I feel this building" - go WHERE?! out of the building?

"floorplan" - singer
"building" - relationships with ...

The "floorplan" looks a little messed up, but "the building" needs some serious fixing.
