I don't know why, but this is one of my favorite songs of his. It does seem to be full of heartbreak and conflict. I think it's interesting that it seems to be sung/written using 3rd person narrative yet it is obviously happening to the singer/narrator. I love the single opening note on what sounds to me like a triangle too. "Haunting" is an apt description. |

I've heard or read rumors that this song is about Pete's brother Rick, who is a very successful manager to stars i.e. Leo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. That might explain the line " I was in the door" which might have been what he thought when he was young and green and newly arrived to LA. Maybe he thought he wouldn't have to work so hard but he found out differently. Maybe his brother set him straight and Pete realized he did have to put the work in. He did too; paying his dues playing clubs in LA for quite a few years before he got a record deal. Who knows though. Pete's songs tend to be very abstract. |
